“What’s going on, Ma? We didn’t get to bed until late, and I didn’t hear my cell phone until about five minutes ago. Why is Pops going off?”

“It’s bad, Son.”

As soon as those words left my mother’s mouth, Finley screamed.

Whatever Ma said after was lost to me as I watched tears stream down her face, and she stared at her cell phone like she’d seen a ghost. I took it out of her hands and pulled her to me. Finley wrapped her body around mine and sobbed into my neck. I was slightly overstimulated because my mother still talked in the background, and Finley sobbed loudly.

I told my mother I’d hit her back and picked up Finley’s cell phone.

CON WOMAN OR FIANCÈE?

Town resident, Finley White may have just come into the biggest payday of her life. Sources say that White went into Diamonds & Moore to steal, but when she was caught, she sank her claws into Kairo Moore instead. Now they’re suddenly engaged. I smell a con . . . It’s sad that Moore doesn’t see that he’s just a ploy for White to get her hands on his family’s millions or is it billions. Sources say White used what’s between her legs to bag a high-profiled bachelor.

Can we trust the source, or have White and Moore found love in an unusual place?

I gripped Finley’s phone as I scrolled down until I was at the gossip page’s comments.

@bennythepictureman:I should have known something was up. She wanted to disrespect and lie on me when she has been being a low class ho for the rich man.

@camillehudsonnoriver:She got me fired too! I caught her stealing and instead of seeing that girl for who she was@themooreyouknowlet me go.

The source from the gossip page had Camille all over it, but I didn’t think she was dumb enough to comment.

I took a screenshot of everything and forwarded it to my lawyer, then called Von.

“Meet me at my parents’ house,” I told Von as soon as the call connected.

“Bet.” He hung up, and I soothed Finley through her tears.

“Come on, baby girl. We need to head to my parents’ house so we can brainstorm on our next moves.”

Finley leaned back and looked at me like I had six heads.

She climbed out of my lap and looked around frantically. I knew she was searching for her clothes, but she wouldn’t find them in here. Our clothes were probably still right where we left them. I had a housekeeper that was on a sporadic schedule.

If Laura came in today, then our clothes would be picked up and hanging in the laundry room, ready to be dry-cleaned.

“I can’t go to your parents’ house, Kairo! Did you see what they’re saying? I know it was Camille who did that shit, too. She couldn’t get you on her side, so she resorted to slander.”

She broke down again.

“That’s why we have to go to my parents’ house. Our lawyers will handle her. They have all the footage and documentation stating that this is a smear campaign. She will pay for what she’s doing to you.” I stood from the bed and walked to her and grabbed her face. “I need you to remain calm on this. A cease and desist will be sent. Yes, people have seen it, but I promise to make Camille’s trial just as public. She doesn’t get to hurt you just because she’s facing her karma. How about we shower and then go touch some grass?”

Through her tears, Finley laughed.

“You still want me after all of this? It can’t look good, and Steven is probably clicking his heels right now.”

“Yes, I still want you, and it doesn’t matter if he is. He can’t get me out of my position, and if he tries, he’ll be sued too.”

In the shower, I catered to Finley’s mind, body, and soul.

I washed her, made love to her, and then gave her a massage as I cleansed her again. It took us about two hours to get out of my house, and although I appeared calm, I was fuming. My calmness was for the sake of Finley. Her character was attacked today. Even when things looked good for her, there was always something tearing her down.

As we drove to my parents’ house, she was on three-way with her family.

“My parents are coming over too. I appreciate you for getting my mind off things for a while, but I need my parents.”

“No need to explain, baby girl. Even at thirty-five, I am the same way.” I grabbed her left hand and gave it a squeeze. “You need your safe space, and you deserve that. One day, it’ll be me, but right now, I’m okay that it’s not.”
