I lifted my laptop on my lap and opened my email. I stared at the blinking cursor in the email that I crafted to the dean. My phone buzzed, and I glanced down at it.

KING DAVID:

I miss you more than words can say. I just finished praying for you, and I heard God say, “Wait for her.” So, I’m waiting.

My heart exploded in my chest. I couldn’t believe that he sent that message. Tears welled in my eyes, and I found it hard to see. I texted back a short text.

ME:

Thank you for your patience. I promise that I will see you soon and tell you everything. I love you.

KING DAVID:

I love you more.

I set the phone down, closed my eyes, and rested my head against my headboard. The Lord had seen my broken heart, and He immediately answered through the man I loved.

I had named Salem “King David” in my phone because he reminded me of the statue of David that Michelangelo had been commissioned to create. Every painting and sculpture that I crafted of that man highlighted the regal and royal bearing of aman who knew that he was born to lead and was assured of his place in this world.

I hit send on the email, and with a sigh, I closed my laptop and set it aside. I curled up in a fetal position on my bed and pulled a blanket over me. All I needed was a good cry and a little nap. It always made everything feel better.

I wasn’t naturallya patient man, but I had strong faith. When I prayed about Koi, I heard God clearly tell me to be patient and wait for my woman. I knew that she was mine, and there was no doubt in my heart about that. I just needed her to know that she belonged to me and find her peace in that. Once she came to me, I promised never to let her go again.

It had been four weeks since we last saw one another. I thought that I saw her at my graduation, but there were thousands of people there. So, I couldn’t be sure. I had done a lot in that time, including visiting the school again and speaking with the dean.

I pulled the door open to see Koi standing on the other side with her finger extended to ring the bell. I was about to headout to handle some last-minute business. My heart was full at the sight of her, yet fear crept into my belly as I prayed that she wasn’t here to say goodbye.

“Hey.”

“Hey, yourself, stranger.”

She smiled slowly. “I missed those,” she confessed as she reached a hand up to poke her finger into one of my dimples.

“What’s that?” I asked, pointing at the large package underneath her arm.

“Can I come in?”

“Yeah.” I pulled the door open wider and followed her into my apartment after closing the door.

“You look like you were about to go somewhere.”

“I was. Heading out to handle some business.”

She looked down and then up at me again. “Should I come back?”

“No, you’re good. Whatcha got?”

She lifted the package onto the island in my kitchen.

“Open it. It’s yours.”

“Mine?” I asked, grinning. “I hope this isn’t a goodbye gift.”

“It’s my apology to you.”

“Baby, I don’t need an apology. The only thing that I care about is making sure that you’re whole. As long as you’re coming back to me, that’s what matters. No apologies necessary. I get that you’ve got a lot going on and needed some time alone.”

“I needed to make sure that I took time to be whole for you, Salem. I needed to make sure that the decisions I was making were the best ones.”
