I give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "No Dani, you go. I'm going to stay the night with him, and I don't think I can handle seeing him like this right now. I'm going outside for some fresh air and to take a minute."

"Okay, I’ll be right back." She squeezes my hand then walks through the double doors with J.D.

"Razor, I'm going outside."

Razor squeezes my hand and follows me outside. "We don't know who targeted D, so you aren't going anywhere by yourself."

We find a bench out front and sit down. I begin to sob as Razor wraps his arms around me.

"He’s strong and no doubt he's fighting for you. That motherfucker is so head over heels in love with you he wouldn’t dare check out before getting shit straight with you." With a hint of humor in his voice, he gives me a playful nudge.

"I'm so stupid, Razor. I should never have left him like that. I should have at least been upfront with him."

"Kira, I’m not going to talk about what you saw because that is not my place. I’m just telling you that I’m positive it wasn’t what you thought. He’s never loved anyone like he’s loved you, at least not as long as I have known him.”

“I’m not so sure about that, Razor. It hurt so much." I lower my head and wipe away my tears.

"I'm sure it did. But that's my brother, and I have seen him for the past couple of days. He has never felt so shitty in all his life. You have no reason to be worried about any other woman, Kira. That man loves you more than life itself.”

I lay my head on Razor’s shoulder and release a breath. "I hope you're right. He has to pull through because my heart can't take much more."

We sit for a few more minutes in silence, letting the sounds of the outside world fill the void until Dani and J.D. walk out. I give them both hugs.

"Sis, you need to be prepared before you go in there." She wipes tears from her face. J.D. pulls her closer to his body and wraps his arms around her.

I hold my head down, and my heart clenches in my chest. "I’ll prepare as much as I can."

Dani hugs Razor and embraces me one more time. "We’ll be back in the morning. Please call me if anything changes."

"Of course, sis. Make sure you rest. I’ll see you guys in the morning." Saying our final goodbyes, Razor and I head back inside.

"You ready?" Razor asks. I nod, and we walk through the large double doors.

We take the elevator to the fourth floor where the ICU is located, stopping at the information desk. The receptionist gives us Austin's room number, and we move down the long hallway. My heart begins to beat faster, my hands become clammy, and my steps slow down. Sensing my anxiousness, Razor wraps his arm around my shoulder and pulls me close to his body.

"Calm down,” he whispers. “He is alive, and he loves you. You have to stay strong for him."

I take in a deep breath to settle my nerves. We stop outside in front of a room with 345 written on the front. Razor gives me a small smile. "This is it. You ready?"

"As ready as I’ll ever be."

I slowly push down the door handle. The continuous sound of the heart monitor beeping and the clicking of the breathing machine pushing air into Austin's lungs fills the room.

The sounds of the machines and the sight of all the wires and tubes coming from his body cause my knees to buckle, and I slump to the floor. My hands come up to my mouth and my body shakes. I begin to sob uncontrollably. With his arm still draped around my shoulders, Razor squats down with me and slowly raises me to my feet. He then escorts me over to a chair to sit beside Austin's bed.

"Remember to be strong for him. You are the only reason he is alive," he whispers in my ear. He places a kiss on my forehead then walks to the other side of Austin's bed.

Razor grips Austin's hand, gives it a slight squeeze, and leans down to whisper in his ear. "She's here, man, now wake your ass up and fix all this shit. I promise you whoever did this is a fucking dead man. I promise you."

"Razor, do you haveanyidea who would do this?" I stand to push Austin's hair out of his face, placing a kiss on his forehead and whispering in his ear, "I'm here, baby."

Razor walks over to me and hugs me. "We don't have anything concrete, but we're working on it. You keep talking to him and let us handle finding out who did this."

I intertwine my and Austin’s hands together. The room noises fill my head. I retake my seat. "I’ll stay with him but stay out of it? I can’t promise you that, Razor. Keep me informed, please."

"I'm going to head out. I’ll bring you some food and a change of clothes." He takes a final look at Austin and leaves the room.

As time passes by, all I can do is sit and stare at the man I love, helpless as machines are keeping him alive. I hold my hand clasped in his and lower my head on the bed, praying that he wakes up so I can at least hear his voice.
