Seconds later, we collapsed in a heap, taking gasping breaths. I was tangled in their bodies, their legs over mine, their arms holding me protectively.
It was strangely comfortable, even though it shouldn’t be. We were on a hard concrete floor, but it wouldn’t matter at this point if we were on soft pillows. The need wouldn’t have changed.
The feeling of being close to them, being allowed to touch them and to have them hold me was all I needed.
At least for now.
Seconds later, we heard a noise.
I lifted my head first, still lost in the haze of sex, but I knew exactly what was happening.
The creature that had once been Dr. Blackwell clapped as if we’d just given the finest performance. The others soon followed, their whistles and thunderous applause drawing the anger from my wolves.
“Don’t,” I said quietly, trying to calm their anger. “Don’t react. Just hold me for as long as we’re allowed.”
I kept my eyes on Thanatos, trying to figure out what he had planned for us next. Whatever it was would be just as painful. Just as humiliating.
But we would rise above it.
Their wolves were even closer to the surface. Not only did my instinct tell me that, screaming it loudly in my soul, but I could sense it as before. This time only stronger.
When I looked into Kai’s eyes, he nodded, acknowledging I was correct. Whatever drug had been given to them had finally worn off. Unfortunately, if discovered, they would likely be dosed again. This was our single chance of escaping.
Moments of doubt crowded the seconds of elation.
Even if we did, where would we go? As far as the police were concerned, I was still at large, a fugitive. They’d be hunting me, watching my apartment. I also couldn’t return to my father’s house. Thanatos would go there first.
We needed to destroy the portal or he would become unstoppable. That meant a plan was needed. And time. Enough time to determine how we could do it.
I felt a shimmer, a tiny vibration from somewhere within the building. Apollo lifted his head, tugging me even closer.
“What is that?” he asked quietly, but out loud.
“I don’t know.” Whatever it was, the soldiers and scientists hadn’t detected it.
But Thanatos did.
He abruptly turned, barking out directions that we couldn’t hear. He’d obviously turned the sound off. Almost instantly, most of the soldiers raced to the door, leaving the scientists with bewildered looks on their faces.
“Listen to me,” I whispered. “If your ability to shift has returned, you need to do so now. Please.”
Roman nodded, disengaging himself from me, but remaining crouched so as not to draw the attention of anyone in the laboratory. “She’s right.”
Apollo snarled, allowing the sound to linger. “Once we do, little mate, stay between us. When we’re outside, climb on my back. Do not fight me on this. We will have one chance of getting out of here.”
“But we will return,” I insisted. “To destroy the portal.”
Kai hissed. “We talk about it later. We shift. Now.”
To most people, seeing bones breaking, a snout forming where a face had once been, claws replacing fingers, and fur sprouting on every inch of skin would be terrifying.
Not this girl. Not to the woman or to the scientist.
I was fascinated.
But more than that, I was able to accept what I’d been confused about before.
I was falling for the three rugged, sexy men and the beasts they’d been born as.
