“Hannah, I don’t know if I’ve thanked you enough for allowing me back into your life,” Holden says, his voice low and soft. “I wish that I had been able to be here sooner.”
“You don’t have to thank me. I might have been pissed about not being able to reach you, but I never would have kept you from Kerrigan.”
He kisses my neck. “I know that, but I was worried. I wouldn’t have blamed you for cutting me out completely.”
“Kerri loves you.” I grin and kiss him quickly. “I happen to be pretty fond of you too.”
“Oh?” he asks, his tone teasing as he holds me closer. “Does that mean that you’re going to keep me around for a while?”
I hum and pretend to think about it before nodding. “I might. You do know how to make pretty good pancakes, and you build furniture. Those are both things I’m not that good at.”
He laughs and shakes his head. “So, you’re keeping me around to use me. I see how it is.”
“I meant it when I said that I want this to be a secret.” The smile drops from my face as I look at him. “And I want to take this slow. Just because we agreed to see where this relationship takes us doesn’t mean that I want to start sleeping in the same bed right away.”
“Slow sounds good to me. I don’t want to risk messing this up with you again. I don’t think I could forgive myself if I lost you a second time.”
I smile and put my hands on either side of his face, pulling him in for a kiss. “Thank you. I know that this is a lot all at once but I’m just thinking about how to protect all of us.”
“I know.” He holds me in his arms and stands up. “Now, what do you say we go watch a movie and celebrate the first night in our new apartment?”
“Sounds perfect to me,” I say as he sets me down. “I’ll make the popcorn if you pick the movie?”
Holden grins and grabs the baby monitor before taking off down the hall. I head into the kitchen, taking a moment to admire my new home before sticking a bag of popcorn in the microwave.
As I lean against the counter and wait for the popcorn to pop, Holden drags the couch into the right position before rummaging around in the boxes. He pulls out a couple different blankets and falls onto the couch.
“Are you in the mood for horror or action?” Holden asks as he grabs the remote and turns on the television. “I was thinking horror, but I don’t know if that’s your kind of thing or not.”
“I like a good horror movie every now and then.” I pour the popcorn into a big bowl before heading over to him.
Holden picks a movie as I settle in beside him, curling up against his side.
While the movie starts to play, I can’t help but think that this is the perfect way to spend a night.
I hope I don’t do anything to mess us up.
This is the best my life has been in a long time.
Chapter Seventeen
Holden
Myvisionstartstoblur as I stare at the list of names I still have to call. As I lean back in my seat and rub my eyes, my head aches. It’s been a long day of calling old contacts and getting this new division of my security business established.
Even though I have more than enough money coming in from my security company, this new division will be a way to still live in the world of spies without going out on jobs.
I want to make sure that I’m doing everything in my power to be there for Hannah and Kerri. If I can still fulfill my passion while being there for my family, then I might just have a way to make sure that everyone is happy.
I have to make a couple more phone calls to the guys who’s files standout and I set up a meeting with them.
I hear the front door of the office open and I instinctively place my hand below my desk, reaching for my gun.
“Who’s there?” I inquire.
“Love what you’ve built here,” a familiar voice trails through the hallway.
A well-known figure strides into the dimly lighted room like a ghost from my past, emerging from the shadows. I’m often in competition with this seasoned spy, Rigby. He emits a deliberate nonchalance, but I know he wants to beat me as much as I want to beat him. His thick beard frames his sharp features and gives him a tough, sophisticated look. His piercing blue eyes, which bear witness to the secrets he has seen, have a twinkle of both competitiveness and friendship in them.
