Panic and anger surged in me as I thought of my cub and the danger I had put us in. Fenrys, who didn’t even know where I was. The mission I had failed to complete.

“Now, my sources tell me that you’ve had plenty of opportunities to take down the alpha. So why is Fenrys Randon still swanning around like he owns the place? Because the heartbroken, pathetic woman who came to me a long time ago wasn’t hesitating. Why are you now? And sending your friend to bargain your way out of it was a nice move but she doesn’t interest me. I sent her away. Do your own dirty work next time, Thalia.”

At my silence, Kato linked his fingers through my hair and pulled my head back painfully. I let out a gritted sob. “He’ll come for you.”

“Will he now?” Kato laughed darkly. “I’d like to see him try.” With one hand, he grabbed my face in a vice grip. “I want answers, Thalia.”

I snarled at him. But as I did, I felt the second heartbeat within me, the cub growing in me. The other life I kept trying to deny. The shift in my scent—and I knew Kato did as well. His eyes dropped to my stomach. A horrible smile curled on his face.

“Well. I think I have my answer.” He stood up, chuckling to himself. “We’ll see how the alpha male reacts when he knows we have his mateandhis cub.”

Fenrys wouldn’t find out the whole truth from Kato. He would receive a twisted version of it, painting me as cold-hearted. I loved him, I realized. Yes, he was my mate, but I was falling for him, too. Perhaps I already had. And whatever Kato did to me to get at Fenrys, the way I had failed to, would be nothing compared to the pain of knowing my mate didn’t know that I loved him.

“No,” I yelled, fighting against my bonds. “No! Kato—”

“Shut up.”

“Youhelpedme! You helped me once. Please don’t hurt him.” My eyes welled with tears as I thought about the new life I now wanted to protect more than anything. “Don’t hurt—don’t hurt my child.”

“Yes, Thalia, I helped you. I helped you get into the Games for you to act on my behalf. For you to get your revenge, but the only thing you did get was pregnant. Are you so committed to fooling him? Perhaps that’s what we’ll tell Fenrys. Your act was so good that you really went all the way. Never mind, he’ll know what a traitor you are. No doubt an alpha can claim his cub whether he wants the mother or not.”

“I don’t want revenge,” I cried, screaming. “I don’t want to do this.Please. Just don’t hurt Fenrys.”

“Oh, little Luna, I’m not going to hurt him.” Kato’s smile was wicked in the dark basement. “I’m going to do what you failed to do. I’m going to destroy him and his pack. Him being mated to you only guarantees that the whole pack will come to fight for you.”

A cloth was smothered over my face again, pulling me back into that darkness. Before I went under, I heard his voice again. “Send word to Fenrys Randon. Let him come for whatever’s left of her.”

My scream was garbled as I fell unconscious once again.

Chapter 20 - Fenrys

Before I could run after Thalia, her mother had stopped me, giving me a bright smile.

“She’s understandably nervous,” she assured me. “Let me go to her.”

And she had. Minutes later, Thalia’s mother had returned, telling me Thalia would be following her in a moment. But when she didn’t, and the doorway remained empty, I fretted.

Servers were laying food across the banquet table, but something was wrong. I excused myself, bypassed the hands reaching for me to congratulate me and my mate, and headed into the hall. That was when it hit me. Her scent had changed. It was something I’d noticed earlier that day; it was stronger, but I had thought that it was only due to us accepting the mating bond.

Except it was something else—I couldn’t put my finger on it. Why did she smell different?

I text Conall to bring Lyna into the hallway. When I got near the bathroom, the scent of chemicals hit me. A cloth was on the floor, reeking ofsomethingbut Thalia’s scent was also mingled in there. An ice-cold shiver ran down my spine. Thalia was in danger.

Conall approached with one of the women in tow. “Can you check if Thalia is in the bathroom? Her mother checked on her but she still hasn’t come back. Get Graham to knock on her hotel room for her. Something’s happened—”

“It’s okay, Fen,” Conall said, placing a hand on my shoulder. “It’ll be okay. We’ll get her. We’ll—”

My phone buzzed. My relief at seeing Thalia’s name was short-lived when I saw the address. I showed Conall, and his expression went stony.

“That’s the warehouse we’ve been scouting,” he said. I already knew that but I needed the confirmation.

Anger was an explosion in me as I clenched my hands around my phone. Thalia had been taken.

I shoved my phone into Conall’s hands. “Take us there.”

“What shall I tell the guests?”

“Fuck the guests! Con, my mate isgone.” I stared at him, wild-eyed. I was two seconds from shifting in the hallway and getting to Thalia faster. Chest to chest with my second in command, I stared him down, a silent challenge. He had his doubts about Thalia, and if she was working for Kato, this very well could be a set-up, and I knew that was what he was worried about.
