I lick my lips. ‘I’m not. I think that’s important for you to know.’

He gives me a flat look. I’m not getting away with this, I suppose.

‘Fine. Back to my point about the gym. I think it would be easier if I go with friends. You two can help keep me focused.’

He doesn’t buy it. It’s all over his face. He knows I need someone to help me keep my dick in line. After a beat, he sags back and waves his hand at me. ‘Fine. But in my experience, you’re just fighting the inevitable.’

No. I refuse to accept that. I refuse to bend. I refuse to break!

Again.

It was a onetime thing. A momentary blip. We were just disoriented from the electricity in the air and the lights flickering on and off and the power going out. It willnothappen again. Even if I wanted it to. After those lights came back on, he looked at me like he wanted to kiss me again, but I didn’t let him. I pressed a hand to his chest, pushed him off me, and stood. He was like a Roman soldier ready for war.

So I held out my hand for a respectable handshake.

He stared at it so long he went a little cross-eyed, but he shook it, then let me go. He didn’t ask me to stay, which was all I needed to know about whatever it had been between us. He clearly feels the same way.

A mistake that couldn’t happen again.

‘What time should I be ready?’ I ask.

‘You serious?’

I nod.

Rhett’s eyes sparkle. ‘Seven.’

‘In themorning?’ My eyes are bugging out of my head. Good fuck, what is wrong with my friend? Who gets up that early to torture themselves?

He truly is a sociopath.

He shrugs. ‘Don’t blame me. Blame Mellie. He sets the schedule. But if that’s too early for you?—’

‘No.’ My fingers snap down hard with my irritation. ‘No. It’s fine. I’ll be ready at seven. And I’ll be happy too.’

That’s a fucking lie. I won’t be happy about it, but it’s better than the alternative. I want to see Thom again. I want to ogle and fantasize without giving in to my weaknesses.

So what other choice do I have?

CHAPTER SEVEN

THOM

“Hey, Leaf!”I say, catching sight of my new best friend out in the wild. I’m striding down the street with Isaac, the humidity in the air from the recent storms making our shirts stick to our skin, but it didn’t keep us from going out to grab coffee and a bagel this morning. Honestly, I don’t mind the storms because they remind me of Robbie and how hot he was, moaning against my lips.

Told Isaac all about it around a mouthful of cream cheese.

He told me to keep my cum in my mouth.

“Leaf! Hey!” I shout again as I see my new friend pushing a large cart from the nursery two stores down.

“Who the fuck is Leaf?” Isaac asks.

“A friend from work.”

Just as I say that, Leaf turns his head and grins, holding up a hand in a wave as the large cart he’s pushing starts toroll forward. His eyes widen as he grasps for it, and Isaac and I rush forward to help him. We all grab it at the same time and bring it to a stop. It’s full of small potted plants, vegetables and herbs from the looks of it.

“I thought Michael was eating all your shit,” I say.
