I had to fix this. I had to keep my family safe.
“What’s on your mind?” Everest asked as we walked to our cars. “You stink of anxiety.”
“I need to fix this,” I said, echoing my thoughts.
Everest nodded.
“You will, and I’ll be by your side helping.”
“We all will,” Seymour said. “The entire gang will be there if you need. We could scour the streets and break down doors that might be hiding her. Just say the word.”
I paused as we reached my car, leaning against the door, thinking about the alphas that had become my closest friends through training sessions and fights. I’d known Everest the longest, but they were all like family to me now.
The otherswouldhave my back, I knew that, but I wasn’t so sure that I should get them involved. If things backfired now, at least we were the only three who knew anything.
“Only if it comes to it,” I finally said.
They both nodded.
“Whatever you say,” Everest sighed. “It’s not such a bad thing asking for help sometimes…”
I looked at my friend. The lighthearted man that he was, even in a situation like this, remained levelheaded and easygoing.
“Maybe. I’ll think about it.”
Everest beamed.
“Let us know as soon as you hear anything.”
I nodded and got in my car, eager to get home but before I could even start my car, my phone rang.
To my disgust,Harvey’sname lit the screen.
For a second, I saw red as his betrayal came back to me. I didn’t want to answer. I wanted to find him and put him in the hospital.
I hit the button.
“How dare you call me, you piece of scum,” I spat.
I could practically hear the way he shrank from my angry words.
“Hi Coal,” he said after a moment. “How are you?”
He sounded like he was about to piss himself but that made me feel only a bit better.
“How am I?” I asked slowly. “You sold my sister to some gangsters to make a quick buck off my back, Harvey. Me, your own client.”
“N-no,” he argued. “It wasn’t like that.”
“Then what was it like?” I demanded.
“Yeah, I-I thought it might work in our favor to set something like this up. Throw the fight and make a quick buck, you know?”
“So you suggested the whole idea?” I asked, a growl rumbling through my chest.
“No, no. I thought they would let me convince you! I didn’t know they would take Asha! Please, believe me!”
“Why though, Harvey?” I demanded. “We were making plenty of money winning.”
