Suddenly it clicked and I threw my head back against the headrest.

“You owe them money,” I said.

“Y-yeah,” he admitted. “I owe them. I thought this would be a way to pay them back.”

I snorted.

“How is that working out for you?”

He was silent.

“Look,” he eventually said, his voice coming out a little stronger, “I wanted to call you to make amends before...”

A chill traveled through me.

“Before what, Harvey?”

He was silent.

“Tell me first,” he said. “Are you ever going to forgive me? We can go back to a professional working relationship. No more screw-ups, I promise.”

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

“Are you fucking joking?” I suddenly snarled.

Harvey hummed softly.

“I thought you might say that,” he said quietly. “I was just thought it would be fair to give you a chance, Coal, considering what a mess I got you into.”

“A chance?” I asked.

“Your omega,” he said. “The one you stole. Abram isn’t very happy about it... Not to mention the Belkin brothers losing all that money and Lambert... you beat the shit out of him, nearly killed him when he was supposed to win.”

I stilled, my heart racing.

“What are you talking about?” I asked slowly.

“I’m talking about the fact that I owe these guys. All of them now. And they all want you to pay. And I have to help them get what they want...”

My claws shot out of my nailbeds.

I had to flex my grip on the wheel to keep them steady.

“Harvey,” I said slowly, “whatever you’re going to do, don’t do it.”

It was his turn to laugh, a soft, mocking chuckle.

“I gave you your chance,” he said. “Now, I’ll give Lambert his.”

“Forwhat?” I demanded. “What the hell does this have to do with him?!”

“That was supposed to be his big break. I guess he wants revenge. I don’t know,” Harvey said nonchalantly. “And he’s willing to pay for it, of course.”

“And that’s all you care about,” I snarled. “Nothing matters to you but money. Not loyalty, notanything.”

“Maybe you should stop worrying about me,” Harvey replied, heat in his voice for the first time since I’d met him, “and start worrying about your skinny little bait wolf!”

He hung up as my blood ran cold.
