He could not find any words, not even to defend himself.

“When you said you were wrong about him being your fated mate, was that also a fib?”

Soren swallowed, suddenly unable to meet her knowing eyes.

She placed a hand on his arm.

“Go to him, Soren. He needs you.”

Soren inhaled sharply and nodded, unable to pretend any longer.

It seemed that whatever happened from here on out, he would have to face it with Nikolai at his side... That was if he didn't run again.

NIKOLAI

Nikolai knewthat he should be afraid.

Soren, in full wolf form, had been a terrifying sight launching toward him, fangs exposed in an angry snarl.

But the truth was, if not for the others causing trouble, Nikolai would have refused to leave his side. He'd wanted to cling to Soren even as the other shifters threatened him.

Were they fighting now? And over him… despite how he’d left Soren, the shifter still defended him.

Nikolai squeezed his eyes shut, taking a steadying breath before crawling onto Soren's bed.

For a cave, Soren's room was surprisingly cozy. It was dim, lit only by the sunlight seeping through the edges of thick curtains that hung in the doorway. Fur carpets covered the floor, the large bed was pushed up against the stone wall. There were candles on a table nearby and a fireplace in the corner, but none were lit. Nikolai didn't care though. After the journey they'd had, Soren's bed was the only thing that mattered to him.

He lay his head down on the soft pillows. So fluffy, probably filled with down. The blanket was warm too. The moment he crawled under it he let out a sigh, his eyes drifting shut.

He still felt feverish, and his entire body ached worse than before.

The journey had been arduous.

For two days, trapped in a carriage with Andrey, he had been unable to properly stretch out or relax. And he hadn't been able to relieve the ever-present, ever-frustratingarousal, but that was for the best because even the gentlest touch down there hurt him.

Tears stung Nikolai’s eyes.

He squeezed them shut, pushing off the memories of the fear he'd felt at being dragged up here by those shifters. The three that had taken them had been forceful, but they'd had no choice but to trust them. Still, leaving their help behind felt wrong. Coming from a castle to the middle of the wilderness was daunting.

How could anyone live out here? he wondered. And would he be able to?

Nikolai bit his lip at the thought. It kept coming to him, unbidden and he couldn't push it away any longer.

Would he be forced to remain at Soren's side from now on? Living in these mountains, sleeping in this very cave each night?

He turned his face into the pillow, inhaling Soren's scent and instantly, he was soothed.

A soft moan left him and he rolled onto his stomach, burying his face into the fabric, desperate for more.

Just the press of the soft bedding against his cock, while he breathed in Soren’s smell, made precome seep from the tip despite the tenderness.

It still ached, but not enough to stop Nikolai from pressing his hips down desperately, seeking more relief.

Where was Soren?!

A hand landed softly on his back and Nikolai gasped, rolling over to catch it in his own before Soren could take it away.
