An omega in heat was dangerous for everyone involved unless their alpha took care of them quickly, the temptation could be too much.
Case in point, as soon as Nikolai was far enough away that they could no longer smell him, Soren felt reason slowly return.
His hackles lowered, his muscles easing. He saw the others shift, the fight leaving their form.
“How did you get him?” he demanded.
“We didn't,” Kamon snapped. “We found your omega searching the mountainside for you with an entire human entourage.”
“We agreed to bring him to you, but not the others,” Botan said, stepping to the front. “He insisted on his brother joining though.”
Soren stared at them all.
“If any of you so much astouchedhim—”
“Relax,” Kamon sneered. “No one wants your seconds. Why else would we bring him to you?”
Why indeed.
It wasn't out of goodwill.
Soren's insides were tied in knots, his thoughts overcome by the fact that Nikolai had come looking for him. He didn't even know where the prince had traveled from. He could have been searching for days, all while his body was ravaged by an unsatisfied heat cycle.
He nodded at the group and turned from them, unable to process everything that had happened.
As he reached the ledge where his den was situated, it finally hit him.
There was only one reason that Kamon would try to help him and that was to get Soren out of the way.
Bringing the human here removed Soren from his good standing with the rest of the pack. He had been trying to rebuild their trust, to show that he was one of them as well as the sturdy alpha they had always known.
Nikolai's presence would now undo that.
If they completed their bond, Kamon would be the favorite choice for pack alpha.
For a long minute, Soren stood there, staring at the sheer mountain walls, wondering what to do next.
Finally, Anzu stepped into his line of sight, smiling gently.
“Your omega is in your den,” she said. “The other human is in mine. I'll take care of him.”
Soren managed to nod.
“Thank you,” he said. “You should be resting, not cleaning up my messes.”
She placed a hand on her large belly and shrugged.
“It is not as much a mistake as you would have us believe, is it Soren?” she asked.
He frowned at her.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“His heat is strong,” she said, and her meaning was clear. “So too is your bond.”
Soren's brows lowered, the corners of his lips falling into a frown.
“That makes me think the rest of what you said might also be untrue.”
