SO YESTERDAY

“Oh, my god…” I whisper, dropping my phone in my lap, “I… I got in?”

Just when I thought I was alone, an absurd amount of commotion erupted outside my bedroom balcony. My head pops up from my pillows as my head shoots in that direction as if I were a meerkat, followed by the tossing of my comforter from my body. Running to the window, I peek behind the sheer curtains, seeing the top of a straw hat that sat on my mother’s head. Beside her was a pile of shovels that had fallen.

Knowing she was there, I figured it was best to get out of bed. I wanted to tell her the news, of course, but also get advice. Once I slipped on my fluffy monkey slippers, I bolted downstairs to the backdoor, reaching to slide it open. Mom was visibly fed up, and the shovels seemed like her last straw.

I open the door, the beaming sun burning my skin instantly.

“Mom?”

I shield my eyes.

“Paisley!”

She swings her head around before looking at me.

“I thought you went boating?”

I shrug, walking out to her.

“Not really into that today.”

“You? Not into boating? Am I speaking with my daughter right now?”

“I just wanted a little space from men for today. They’re annoying.”

She bursts into laughter, taking a sip of her lemonade.

“You think it’s bad now? Just wait until you marry one.”

At this rate, I’m questioning if that’s even a good idea.

“How did you commit for over twenty years? It’s beyond me. Love is too hard.” I sigh, but she stays amused.

FAKING FOREVER

“Well, I’m not in love with justanyone, for starters. Your dad is my best friend. He always has my back. I know he really loves me because he still makes up the tiniest lies so he can get out of things with other people. Never me, though.” she says confidently, removing her gloves.

Go figure.

“Cute.” I pretend to find her advice helpful.

“What? What’s with the face?” she watches me.

“Didyouknow about Josh not getting into Escoffier?” I ask.
