“Thank you.”
“Just one more thing – before you go. Do you recognize anyone in these pictures? They’re some of Lenny’s associates.”
They stopped, moving to the edge of the sidewalk as people walked by. He handed her his cell phone, open to the pictures he’d managed to snap.
To any bystander, it would look like they were exchanging numbers or showing off family pictures – not that anyone was watching. Or at least, he didn’t have any reason to think that they were.
Amanda flipped through the pictures, frowning and pausing at one. “I know that guy. That’s Jared.”
Mike leaned in to see who she was pointing at – a guy he’d photographed meeting with Lenny last week. “Jared who?”
“Jared Knape. He used to be on the San Juan County Council. He’s the one who burned Jade’s house down when she first started trying to build the new state park.”
“I see. Interesting. Very interesting.”
She handed the phone back. “I’m sorry, I don’t know anyone else. But good luck with everything.”
He nodded. He wanted to say something comforting to her about whatever she was going through romantically, but since he wasn’t even comfortable hearing about it, he couldn’t craft anything appropriate. “Thanks. Stay safe.”
He watched as she disappeared into the crowd, then spotted a Starbucks across the street.
Perfect. He tossed the coffee from the cafe into the trash – he’d barely had any of it. It was time to get back to his favorite pecan toffee surprise. And to look into this Jared individual.
