Mike nodded. “Right. That’s what your friend is working on?”
She stopped and looked at him. “What do you know about Will?”
“Nothing really. I was hoping you could tell me some things.”
She started walking again. “Nope. I mean, I don’t know anything.”
“How was the ball?” Mike asked.
Amanda groaned. “You followed me there, too?”
“No, I saw the pictures on the company website. If I’d have known that you were going, I would’ve stopped you. That was really dangerous, Lenny could have – ”
“I know. I saw Lenny and I got out of there as fast as I could. I’m not even sure when they got a picture of me.”
“That’s the problem with those events,” Mike said. “People go to be seen and then…there are lots of eyes to see them.”
“I didn’t stay very long.”
Lenny saw her, but there was no use in belaboring his point. “That’s good. And your friend?”
“Will.” She let out a sigh. “I don’t think that he knows what kind of business Lenny comes from.”
Mike raised an eyebrow. “What makes you say that?”
“Because he took me to see this ridiculous property that obviously looked like the site of a mob movie.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
“Well, and then I told him that one of his clients is in the mob and he was shocked. He didn’t believe me.”
Terrific. “Amanda. You shouldn’t trust this guy, no matter how good of an act he puts on. Of course he knows. He must. If he doesn’t, his boss does. You could be putting yourself in danger.”
“Will isn’t going to rat me out. He didn’t even believe me. He thought I was making it up to push him away.”
Mike sighed. This is what it was like to work with non-professionals. Though professionals got sloppy, too. “You’re not worried about him wondering how you got this information?”
She waved a hand. “My dad’s a cop. It’s averybelievable cover story. I didn’t give him any details, or who it was, I just – accused him of working with the mob. Which he is!”
Oh boy. Maybe it was a mistake to involve Amanda at all. She was behaving…irrationally. What he should have done was emailed her back right away and told her to stay away from Lenny, DGG, and this Will character. But at the same time, her inside knowledge was useful.
“Do you think that you could get on to Will’s computer?”
“Yeah. Probably. Why?”
“Because I’ve tried to get on to Lenny’s computer and have been unsuccessful. But maybe there’s information that your friend Will has access to, and – ”
“Absolutely not. I’m not going to be involved in this anymore. Will stopped speaking to me, and that’s for the best.”
He nodded. “All right, never mind about that then. What about the properties? Did Will show them to you? Do you have access to them?”
“No. And I don’t want access.” Amanda stopped and turned toward him. “Listen, I appreciate that you care about this, and I thought I did too. But I can’t be involved in it anymore. I’m sorry. I should have just let you know that I saw Lenny and left it at that, but I had to get nosy. Now I really regret it.”
“Did something happen?”
She shook her head. “No. Just the whole…thing with Will.”
Oh.Mike frowned. That’swhy she was behaving strangely. There seemed to be some feelings involved here. He’d missed her earlier cues – emotions and romance were not his strong suit. In fact, there might not be anyone less qualified to offer advice to a young woman on her love life. Time to change the subject. “I understand. Well – I appreciate the tip. I’ll stay out of your way.”
