White seems to be the best bet, with the possibility of a black accent wall behind where I’m putting my desk. I think it’ll open the space up a little more and allow me to make use of the natural lighting that enters through the large windows.

Jeremy might allow me to construct a half wall, but before I plan it out, I’d like him to stop by so I can run it by him first. I reach into my pocket and take my phone out, hoping that he’s not busy today so I can get started on the project as soon as possible.

Hey, are you free? I have something I would like to get your opinion on.

I’m free. I can stop by. Sammi is at the hospital waiting for Nikki to be discharged.

How is she feeling?

She’s hopped up on pain meds right now as far as I know.

I’m glad she’s okay. She’ll have to rest for a few days, I imagine.

Yeah, she’s stubborn though. I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes back into work tonight.

I sure hope not.

I hope her boss tells her not to.

I’ll be there in about twenty minutes. I’m just finishing my lunch.

Sounds good. See you then.

Nikki would be stupid to go back to that place so fast. Surely, she’s entitled to some sick days or something.Maybe I should have a word with her boss.

Why am I so concerned about her well-being?

I don’t even know her and I already feel like I have to protect her. This is completely out of character for me. I usually avoid women at all costs, but this one—I just can’t.

I want to know everything there is to know about her.

I’msofuckingtired.

This morning, I texted Jeff to let him know that I’ll be taking tonight off and he texted right back to tell me that he’s not letting me come back to work for at least three weeks, so I can recover. Still, rent is due in a week and I’m not making Jeremy wait for the payment. I have to get back to work as soon as possible so my finances don’t go to shit.

“Have you eaten anything today?” Sammi asks as she eyeballs the food tray I set aside this morning. I specifically told them not to give me eggs and that’s exactly what they brought.

“Not a thing. Take a look under the tray and you’ll find out why,” I reply, rolling my eyes.

“You’re eating something when we get home. I’ll make it for you.”

“Sammi, I’m fine. I can make my own food.”

“It wasn’t a question, love. I’m making you food, whether you like it or not.” she grins.

I let out a huff and take a sip of the lukewarm coffee they served this morning. It tastes like absolutely garbage, but it’s caffeine, nonetheless.

“I wish the doctor would just let me go already. I fucking hate the smell of this hospital,” I complain.

“He just wants to make sure you’re okay. You took a pretty big blow to the head, Nikki.”

Tears start to form in the corner of my eyes as I think about the look on Justin’s face when he was about to hit me with the pipe again. Everything happened so damn fast.

“Do you remember anything past the point of him hitting you with the pipe?”

“Nothing. I remember seeing someone else there too and thinking they were there to hurt me alongside Justin.”

“That was Malachi. The guy we introduced you to last night,” she quietly reveals.
