Malachi hops into the shower and I head over to Sammi’s cabin to see if she has a black headband I can borrow. When I get to her door, I hear Jeremy say something that freezes my entire body.
“Malachi wants to leave tomorrow morning. He hasn’t told Nikki yet, though.” he says.
Told me what? What the fuck is going on?
“She’s gonna be pissed, Jer. I mean, I’m not too happy about it either, to be honest.” Sammi replies.
Unable to stop myself, I open the door and stand there in the doorway with my hand on my hip, glaring at Jeremy. “What didn’t Malachi tell me? Where are you two going tomorrow?”
The look on Jeremy’s face says it all.
“That’s probably something Malachi should talk to you about.”
“No. How about you just tell me…”
“Jesus, Nikki. I don’t want to start shit between you two.”
I look over at Sammi who’s sitting on the bed with a nervous look plastered on her face. As soon as we make eye contact, she glances down at the floor.
“Where are they going, Sammi?” I ask, my entire body shaking from the angry adrenaline rushing through my veins.
Sammi looks up at Jeremy and sighs. “Jer…we should just tell her…”
“Malachi should have told her himself. We’ve had this planned for a few days now.”
“Well, he didn’t.”
Jeremy grabs his phone from the side table and walks into the bathroom, shaking his head. After a few seconds of silence, Sammi turns toward me and shoots me a comforting smile. “Malachi and Jeremy are heading back to the city tomorrow morning. Jessica has been giving them updates about Paul.”
“Seriously? When did he plan on telling me this? After the mind-blowing threesome that’s about to happen tonight?”
Sammi chuckles a little. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be laughing.” she remarks. “I’m sure he was just having a hard time figuring out the right time to mention it.”
I have no idea how to feel about any of this. I understand why he’s doing it, but I just wish he wouldn’t. I can’t stand the thought of something bad happening to him or Jeremy. As if enough hasn’t happened already.
“Just go easy on him, Nikki. We’ve all been through a lot. He’s just trying to do the right thing. You know damn well that thecops won’t do anything about it. Surely they must be aware of those people by now.” Sammi points out.
I fold my arms over my chest, tapping my foot against the hardwood floor. “What if something happens though? We won’t even be there.”
“Nothing will happen. Our boys know how to handle shit.”
“Well…Malachi does, anyway. Jeremy doesn’t even know how to put together a few bookshelves…” I smirk.
“I mean, you’re not wrong,” she laughs. “Just go talk to him, babe.”
I nod my head, reaching behind me to open the door. “I’ll see you in a little bit.”
“Be nice.” she reminds me as I walk through the door and close it behind me.
I take a deep breath as I approach our cabin and hesitantly open the door. As soon as I walk inside, I’m hit with the intoxicating smell of Malachi’s cologne.
Preferred Stock.God damn.
“You’re back! I was just about to go look for you.” Malachi says as he sifts through his suitcase and hauls out a pair of shorts.
“I-uh…I was talking to Sammi.”
“Jeremy already texted me. I’m sorry, baby girl. I did plan on telling you sooner than later.”
