One of the younger boys asked if I could help him bring some snacks to the upstairs rooms, where the kids were all staying. So, I went into the kitchen pantry and helped him bring those to where they were needed. More and more wolves started showing up in the house in their shifter forms. They were amazing, just the sight of them and knowing they were human was magnificent.
I just wished they were all here for a different reason.

I had arrived hereat Kiba with my family as soon as I finished school. To help with the protection of Lexi Turner, the girl whose blood could heal vampires, whose blood—once inside a vamp— could compel shifters. With something that powerful, you could create a killer army.
But she was Ada’s best friend and I had worried that she would be left vulnerable, I was glad when I heard that Lexi had requested to bring her here. If she hadn’t, I was going to. The threat was very real now, shifters— rogue wolves, panthers and bears and scum like the Russet pack were after her. They would stop at nothing to get her too. She was the most valuable thing in the world right now, she held a lot of power in her blood.
“We need to partner up, it doesn’t matter what pack you are from, today we are all equals.” Called out my alpha, I nodded. It was the truth, it was time to set aside our petty differences, we were here as one. Even if we came from different packs, we all had one thing in common. We were shifters, we were humans and we look out for our own.
Galen started to help with the organization. I saw Caleb—Pack Kenneally— put his hand up for needing a partner. “Who will go with me.” he called out. I raised my hand instantly and walked toward him. I had seen him in the halls at Port Willow high, he had graduated a few years ago but I knew who he was.
“Hux,” I held my hand out to shake with him. He grinned and shook my hand. “Caleb.”
“You good at tracking?” he asked me. I shook my head, I wasn't good at tracking but I was definitely good at fighting. “Fighting?”
“Been in a lot of fights, I know how to fight well.” He nodded at me, so I added “Went against a bear shifter and lived.” His eyes looked to my scars and he nodded. He knew who I was…everyone did. I was the cautionary tale of not to wander away from pack lands.
“I think we'll do just fine you and me.”
Man…the rain was relentless, of course these assholes had decided to come attack when the weather was crying down on us. My fur was matted and wet, I shook out the rain from my fur as my paws sank further into the mud. I watched and listened. I could hear our own packs, although it was hard to pinpoint exactly where they were. The rain messed with my senses and dulled the scents… but there was something else.
My wolf knew something was out there, I could feel the fur on my back rise. It was rogue shifters and I could smell something else now… even with the rain, vampire.I growled at the direction they were coming from, Caleb sensed them too. I let out a warning howl to alert everyone we were being attacked from this side. But I was wrong…so wrong.
It only took a second before there was a searing pain to my side. It was so fast it almost made me believe it was all in my head, but my stomach turned and my vison started to blur. What was that?I moved and the pain was still there. I spun around trying to find the source but I couldn’t find anything. My wolf’s vison was better than in human form, but even when I could see clearly again, I saw nothing. It was as if I have been attacked by something invisible.
Before I could think further on it, three red wolves charged us. Caleb was the first to engage as he let out a deep snarl. One of the wolves jumped me, I was ready for this fight, my venom dripping from my teeth, but my moves were slowed by the pain in my side and the heaviness of my limbs. The wolf ripped into my throat, looking for a quick kill. I barely shook him off, as Caleb came charging at him, knocking him free from me.
I was in a large amount of pain. He’d injected his venom into me. Shifter venom only made shifters more aggressive, so it was exactly what I needed to stay in this fight that my body was starting to lose. But the venom did nothing, the fight was leaving me… why? What was happening. My heart rate was slowing and the muscles in my body started freezing up. I couldn’t shift back. Panic rose within me, as my body went limp and I fell to the forest floor, wet leaves and mud beneath me as I struggled to try get up, to no avail. I sucked in a breath, why was it hard to breath… I just had to keep going, Caleb needed me.
But it was the vampire I didn’t see coming until it was too late, he stood down over me, his eyes watching me struggle to breathe. I realized then, that first pain. The one in my side… it was him. I’d fucked up. I’d let my guard down for a second to warn the others, believing the vampire was coming from a different direction, I didn’t think to watch from the side. And now I was paying the ultimate price… death.

It was surprisinglycalm and normal inside the house, all the men had left. All in wolf form. I’d seen more naked men than ever before, I tried to look away, but I definitely saw more dicks than I ever meant too. I kinda saw Jett’s and knew I was caught looking when he gave me a wink and slapped his ass.
There were some ladies handing out drinks, and food. As they waited and listened to the rain. It was endless, it had started and that was it. It showed no signs of letting up anytime soon.
Lexi stayed with me, I held her shaky hand tightly. She was so worried about her mates. She had kept calling them her mates, so I was starting to call them that too. I worried so much for her and so much for them. All of them, risking their lives to protect my best friend just because her blood had magical powers.
I was glad though, that they were out there. Fighting for her. That Lexi had found her way here to Kiba. I was just upset that these people thought they could come and take her away from us. She wasn't going anywhere, they would have to get through all the packs, her mates and me first.
“It's going to be okay, didn't Alaric say that he thought it was going to be on the full moon? Tomorrow?” Lexi squeeze my hand.
“Yes, he said that but I have a bad feeling. I just don't know what it means.” I hugged her, she was so tense and worried. I wanted to take some of that burden from her.
“I can't believe this is happening, I’m so sorry, Lexi. I'm gonna try help in any way I can.” I knew the ladies had asked for us to be up top with the kids, but there were younger teen boys up there in wolf form protecting them and I felt like it would be better for me to be with Lexi, she wanted to be down here and so did I.
We weren’t going to do something stupid like run outside the house, I wanted to help in any way I could. Even if it was just to hand someone a Kleenex. I wanted to be useful.
I heard sounds from the doors near the kitchen, there were two of the females in wolf form standing outside the doors there. There was a wolf that approached, then shifted. It was Maverick. My heart sped up and Lexi’s hand grasped mine tightly. He was soaked with blood and rain. He didn't seem injured from where I was standing, I knew that shifters healed fast, but the sight was too real. Something had happened. Something bad.
“We need help. They’re bringing one of our wolves back, but he isn't healing.” Maverick called out for all to hear.
