“But we got her before they could,” Isaiah finished. “But they could’ve followed.”
“Shit! I need to get to—I need to get there fast.” He almost saidto Auntie Athena’sbut caught himself just in time. The less he divulged to these assholes, the better.
“I’m calling Trevon,” Ryan announced, his phone to his ear.
“Let’s roll,” Kendrick said.
“It’ll take too long by car,” Ace said. “I’ve got another idea.” He leaned low, put the shotgun once again to one of the thug’s head, and said, “I’m going to need the keys to that chopper.”
Chapter Thirty-Two
Lana snuck out of the gate quietly and crept around the tall wall that surrounded Auntie Athena’s property.
On the other side, she heard voices, but it didn’t seem as if anyone realized she was gone.
Well, technically I’m not gone, she thought as she tried to soothe her aching conscience. After the worry she’d put Auntie through earlier, she didn’t want to do anything like that again. It wasn’t just about the spanking, either. She genuinely felt bad for doing that to Auntie.
This is no big deal, she reassured herself as she hurried around the corner.
I’m just going to go to the end of the block, cut through the alley, and come back to Auntie’s from behind.
Something she heard on the other side of the fence stopped her in her tracks, though.
Trevon’s deep voice—she was able to make it out because of how far it carried—said, “Honey, where is Little Lana?”
The response was muffled but she assumed it was Iris who replied.
Oh crap! I don’t want my friend to get into trouble for me. Don’t lie to him, Iris. Just tell him what I’m doing!
A moment later, Trevon’s voice rang clear again. “Honey, no one is in trouble. But this is serious. She could be in danger. Her Daddy called. Where is she, Iris?”
Another reply Lana couldn’t hear.
“Outside the gate? Stay here!” Trevon said.
Lana heard the urgency in his voice and knew this was serious. Plus, if Ace called him, something big was going down.
Why had she left the property? She wanted to cry, vomit, or curl up into a ball. None of that would help her right now, though. She needed to move fast!
Spinning around on her heels, she started running back the way she’d come. Before she could get very far, a silver SUV stopped abruptly at the curb. The back door opened and a large man jumped out. Without saying a word, he closed the gap between them, threw his arms out, and latched onto her. She writhed and wiggled, trying to make it difficult, but he still managed to turn her around.
At least she managed to scream before his hand clamped around her mouth, cutting off the sound.
A thumping sound cut through the air. It sounded familiar but she couldn’t quite place it. She forced her head up, despite the strong hand that was trying to keep it in place and realized there was a helicopter hovering above.
What was going on?
She wouldn’t be around to find out, she realized. Because the guy had her in the back of the SUV so fast, she didn’t even realize she was off the sidewalk until the doors were closing.
It sped away, most likely taking her to her death, she figured.
“Goodbye, Daddy. Please remember me,” she whispered as the first tear slid down her cheek.
Chapter Thirty-Three
Ace had the chopper low enough to see exactly what was going on.
“They have her!” he growled.
