“I didn’t do much,” he mumbled, skin glowing burnt orange mixed with violet.

“You didsomething, baby.” I stroked his soft jaw. “That’s more than most would do.

“I’m just glad things will be better for my family,” he murmured, sleep taking him. “I’ve been saving part of my salary to buy them a bigger apartment, so they won’t have to waste money on rent anymore.”

“That sounds great, little comet.” I pressed a kiss on his forehead, and he sighed. “I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.”

Talking about the Iskari reminded me of the word he had said earlier. I’d assumed it was in his native language, and now I was desperate to confirm he hadn’t called me an asshole, or something equally insulting.

“You called me something before,” I said, glancing down at him. Rev looked up, eyes heavy with exhaustion. “Sol-vay-nerry, or something like that?”

I butchered the pronunciation, and he knew it, because he giggled, low and sleepy.

“Solvenari,” he corrected, the word slipping off his tongue like silk. It gave me goosebumps, and my cock twitched.

Not the time, Kai.

“What does it mean?”

“It means ‘solar flare,’” he replied, yawning as he nuzzled into my chest. “Because you’re blinding, magnetic, and impossible to look away from.”

My throat tightened, and my eyes prickled. It was more beautiful than I’d imagined.

“Also,” he added in a drowsy mumble. “You’re hot as fuck.”

I barked out a laugh, helplessly in love.

I couldn’t get enough of him, and I’d spend forever making sure he knew it.

“I fucking love you, little comet.”

“I love you too,solvenari.”

Kai

I was being insufferable, and I knew it.

I’d been bouncing off the walls like a kid on E-numbers for days, and I was surprised Rev hadn’t walloped me yet. He’d come close, and in the past, he wouldn’t have hesitated to smack me upside the head.

But instead of choosing violence, Rev would just take a breath and give me one of those tight, pained smiles. I figured he spent a lot of time screaming into a pillow when I wasn’t around, but hey, that’s what growth looked like.

I couldn’t help it, though.

Every year, I was far too excited about the end of the season. I performed to the best of my ability in every race, and when my points reflected that, it hyped me up to the point of insanity. Jax was used to dealing with my insane ass, but this year, that responsibility had fallen to Rev, and my teammate was more than happy to hand over the baton.

It was a good thing he’d already said he loved me, because there were no fucking takebacks.

Now the big day was here. The final race of the season, and the day I’d take home my fourth championship.

Rev had laughed when I showed him the space I’d cleared for the trophy.

“Feeling confident, hotshot?”

But he wasn’t laughing later that night. Not when I backed up every bit of that confidence—slowly, thoroughly, and with no room for doubt.

I went into today’s race at the top of the table, but that didn’t mean I could relax.
