“Then I assume you also knew about Björn’s affair with the deceased Scarle–”

“Yes. I knew!” she snapped.

“Then I guess you were okay with it?”

“No. Of course I wasn’t okay! But you think I would kill the whore because of that?”

“I do not. Though, it’s still a possibility we need to investigate further. I saw you pass Scarlett’s table a couple of times that evening.”

“So what?”

“Scarlett got poisoned and it ended up fatal for her. And then of all people it happens that Björn’s jealous girlfriend had brought drugs into the shelter.”

Maya stared at him without speaking. “It’s only natural that you’re a suspect in this situation,” Lennart continued and focused on her features. A suspect’s face could reveal a lot. And Maya was obviously troubled. Her gaze was puzzled. She broke eye contact and avoided his stare furrowing her brows.

“You still have time to think,” Lennart added and drummed his fingers on the table.

“There’s nothing to think about. I didn’t poison her!”

“Did you use drugs during the party?”

“I… I didn’t.”

“How much did you drink?”

“Not much. I was sober.”

“Why did you argue with Björn?”

“W-we... We only had a minor disagreement.”

She lies just like my brother.

Lennart sighed and looked at his watch. “Very well. That’s it. For now.”

“Can I finally go to my room?”

“You’ll be in confinement until we get the results from the lab. If they turn out to be negative, you will be able to go back to your room.”

Maya frowned and crossed her arms.

Lennart pushed his chair away from the table and turned to Gunnar. “Take her back to the cell.”

When Lennart finished his report on Maya’s interview, he headed to his room. He wanted to see that Ryosuke was alright. His chest tightened when he remembered the image of Ryosuke covered in his own blood.

I hope you didn’t try anything again.

When he found himself at the door, panting, he knocked before unlocking it with his card. He opened the door with shaky fingers, and saw Ryosuke look at him in surprise. It looked like he was still unpacking his belongings; he was sitting by the closet with his suitcase open.

Lennart entered the room and closed the door behind him. “I just came to tell you that you can go back to your normal activities, for now. Even though you’re still not cleared of suspicion. Also, it would be good if you return to work tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

Ryosuke nodded and continued stacking clothes in the drawer.

“Do you need anything?”
