Deacon raised a brow at me. “Oh, really? Then are you telling me you weren’t picked up by the Walkers and taken into hiding. That you weren’t forced to stay there.”
I almost laughed at his audacious approach, but none of this was funny at all. “You meanafteryou had your thugs grab me up at Jewel’s apartment? Then the Walkers came and got me away from you at that Connor House. Is that a lie?”
“You have it all wrong, Scarlet,” Wade butted in.
I looked over at him. “And you! You nearly killed me four years ago. He sets you free and now youwilleventually kill me!” I looked over at Belle. “He busted my lip when I refused to wearhandcuffs in the car. He is a liar, a woman beater and he is insane!”
Wade scoffed. “You have always been over dramatic, Scar.”
Belle’s eyes filled with tears as she stammered, “I-I don’t understand.”
“No, your sister is the one who doesn’t understand, Belle,” Deacon finally spoke again. “I will be setting you both free soon.”
I turned around to stare at him. “Why?”
He shrugged. “That was the whole point in the first place. So you could go home.”
I narrowed my eyes at him. This was the last thing I ever expected him to say.Set us free. No way. What was he up to?
“You see?” Belle said. “He is the good guy here.”
I rolled my eyes. “Belle, he kidnapped Jewel and held her in a bunker underground as well as Prophet’s father. He’s a great guy, alright.”
“Another poor girl the Walkers kept under lock and key,” Deacon explained.
“Oh, wow!” I scoffed. “You cannot be that self delusional,Mr. Walker. No one could say that with a straight face without being one of two things… Insane or an all out liar and I think you are both. Jewel is in love with Prophet. No one held her hostage and no one held me against my will either. What I can’t figure out is why you did this.”
He slowly shook his head. “Apparently, there is a lot you don’t understand.”
“Oh, I do!” I glared at him. “I get that you are at war with the Walkers and your mother was too. Only they are your family. You do know that, right?”
He nodded. “I do. But that doesn't make them innocent.”
I nearly staggered back with the lies he had spun here. “They don’t feel the same way, because you arenotinnocent like you have Belle believing. You threatened to drop a bomb on their ranch. To kill babies and women!”
“Whoever claimed that was lying.” He looked angry as his calm look disappeared.
I stared at him as I didn’t believe a word he said. “Ok, so if you are so willing to let us go. Then do it!”
He motioned to the car. “Go ahead, take Wade’s car. Go on up and drive out to your freedom.”
“Hey!” Wade exclaimed as he stepped forward. “You said I could take Scarlet with me.”
“Yeah, that was the deal, Mr. Stephens.” Deacon nodded at him. “I said you could go with her to protect her, but only if she agrees with that.”
If I agreed? He must know why Wade was in prison in the first damn place. “Why on earth would I agree to go anywhere with Wade? He almost killed me!” I couldn’t believe what Deacon was trying to pull here. I kept trying to think of why.
Wade looked enraged as he glared at Deacon. “That’s not what you said!”
I looked over at Wade. “He used you.” I laughed like I was now insane. “Oh, my fucking God!”
Wade growled as he stepped over to me. “You’d better stop laughing at me, bitch. I own you.”
Belle sucked in a fearful breath as she grasped my arm in concern.
“Now, you see it, Belle.” I tugged her close. “He believes he owns me. He agreed to this whole plan because Deacon made a deal with him.” I looked over at Deacon.
He slowly shook his head. “I never told him he couldhaveyou. That’s pure nonsense. He obviously believes that he owns you. I’m sorry if he hurt you. He seemed so concerned for you all this time.”
