“I would prefer you be as far away from me as possible, thanks.” I say with a grimace.

Draven narrows his eyes on me like he’s trying to figure out if I really meant that and I turn away from him, walking around the car with Jayden next to me to get into the passenger seat.

“Don’t get him all riled up, Beth. He’s bad enough,” Jayden whispers in my ear, making me shiver.

“He just gets on every last nerve and there’s nothing I can do about it while we’re stuck with him on this mission,” I hiss back.

“You could zap him a couple times. It may change his attitude.” Jayden opens my door for me.

Once I’m settled in the front seat, he places my bag on the floorboard in front of me and closes the door.

“I don’t know why I can’t drive or sit up front. The rules of Jayden’s car don’t apply anymore because it’s not his car.” Draven pouts.

Greyson turns to him sharply. “The rules of Jayden’s car apply to my car. If you don’t like the seating arrangements, you can stay behind.”

“No, I can’t. They need my help. The mission will fail without me.” Draven’s tone is dripping with arrogance.

Maybe I should have let them sit him closer, so it’s easier to zap him.

Sparks fly from my palm, startling Greyson.

“Easy there, sparky. Don’t burn holes in my seats.” Greyson sits in the seat next to Raven and shuts the door behind him.

“Did I burn holes in Jayden’s seats when I zapped the shit out of you both last time?” I raise a brow at him.

“No, the damn birds took care of that for you.” He chuckles. “On second thought, maybe it’s a bad idea to take my SUV.”

“You already offered. You can’t change your mind now.” I turn back to the front.

Jayden reaches up to hit the button to open the garage and we speed down the street.

“Birds?” Draven asks.

“Stymphalian birds from the myths attacked us twice last time.” I shudder at the memory of hanging out of the car and almost becoming roadkill.

Jayden squeezes my thigh. “Let’s just hope we don’t see those bastards again.”

“There are so many other things we could come across that aren’t much better though.”

What new horrors will we see on this trip? We don’t even really have a direction except to go east.

“Adrian,” I call to the back of the SUV. “Have you seen where we need to go yet?”

“No, but I have a strong feeling that we need to travel on the same route you went on the last time.” Adrian flops back in his seat.

“Through Hesperia?” I ask.

“No,” Jayden yells. “We are not going to hang out with Thia again.”

“Why not?” I grin.

“Just no.” Jayden shudders.

“The same highway for a while,” Adrian corrects me.

Greyson chuckles. “Just don’t take the wrong turn this time.”

“Yeah, yeah, very funny,” Jayden grumbles.
