Jayden was right before. Staying in one place too long is asking for trouble. Especially when there is something on the loose doing gods only know to the souls of Elysium.

We follow Adrian’s lead when we come to a fork in the path. He’s seen the way, just not exactly what we will face on the way there.

“Do you think this is our fault?” I ask thoughtfully.

“What do you mean? We haven’t been here long enough to make those souls disappear,” Raven says, bumping her shoulder with mine.

“We locked the gate, right?” I ask with a raised brow.

“It’s not the only gate, Beth. I’m sure there are demons trying to escape through the others. This isn’t our fault.” Jayden wraps an arm around my shoulders.

“We don’t even know that this is the demons,” Adrian agrees. “It only showed me a dark cloud over Elysium.”

We come up on another cluster of houses that are abandoned.

“It looks like we are going in the right direction at least,” I grumble.

Why are we following the trail of something dark when we aren’t supposed to be hanging out here longer than necessary?

“This is the way to the prophetess. It just so happens that we are following the evil that’s here.” Adrian shrugs.

A bloodcurdling scream fills the air.

“What the fuck?” I shout and follow the sound.

“I guess this place isn’t as deserted as we thought.” Raven grips her ax and races up next to me.

We round a corner and stop. “I guess it is demons.”

Two scaly demons with red eyes are attacking a woman. She’s on the ground, wailing and trying to fight them off.

I rub the charm on my necklace and my whip unfurls in my hand.

“Hey, ugly. Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?” I yell.

The demon’s jaw unhinges as it sucks in a deep breath over the woman and her smoky essence is sucked into its mouth.

The woman’s body wavers, turning more transparent, but before I can flick my whip out at the demon, an arrow flashes past my ear and lodges into the demon’s mouth.

I turn to Adrian and nod as the demon screams and thrashes. The other demon abandons the woman and rushes at us with claws out.

“Fuck, no,” I say and slash out with my magic-fueled whip and it wraps around the demon’s throat.

It bursts into flames screeching out at the pain of being struck by lightning.

The first demon charges, his mouth still open in a scream with the damn arrow in his mouth sticking out the back of its neck.

“Why don’t you just die?” I growl.

Jayden sneaks around the side as I direct the demon’s attention on me.

“Careful, we don’t know if they can come back when we defeat them here,” I call to Jayden.

Jayden nods as he leans over the woman.

Another arrow flies and hits the demon in the eye this time but it doesn’t stop.

“Fuck, how many souls has this fucker drained?” I ask, unsure if that’s why he keeps coming or if it’s because of the weapon used.
