“Dax, what did we discuss about boundaries?” I growl, trying in vain to push at his chest.
My eyes widen as shadows wrap around his neck and he goes flying into a nearby tree. Jayden glares at him, now only feet away.
“She told you to get off her,” he barks. His eyes blaze with anger.
Dax claws at the shadows, gasping for breath, and I’m too shocked to react quickly.
Raven jogs over with her sword out. “Jayden, let him go. You’re going to kill him.”
“Beth told him to get off her. He played a fucking dirty trick to get her in that position. He should beg me to let him go.” He’s not wrong, but he can’t kill another student when we were just training.
Raven’s wide eyes meet mine and she stomps over, offering me a hand. “Is that what happened?”
She glances back and forth between Dax and me, and I nod.
“Yes, that is exactly what happened.” I dust myself off and glare at Dax.
His face is turning red as he continues to claw at nothing.
Raven growls, stomping up to her brother. “Jayden, let him go. I got this.”
Jayden nods once before releasing the shadows. Dax drops to his knees, coughing and gasping for air, but my best friend isn’t done with him. She reaches down, grabbing what little hair he has in his buzz cut and lifts his head so he has to look at her, then punches him in the face.
Dax yelps and slumps to the dirt in a heap. “That’s what happens when you act like a douche.”
“You know your brother is going to be really fucking pissed when he wakes up, right?” I glance between the two of them and they both shrug.
Okay then.
“And before you say it, B, I know you can take care of yourself. It just pisses me off that he thinks he can do what he wants without fucking consequences,” Raven says angrily.
“Well, you know me. That’s exactly what I was about to say.” I touch the lightning bolt charm at my throat and my whip disappears.
“C’mon, B, I’m done training for today,” she huffs.
“What about Dax?” Jayden calls as we walk away.
“Leave him there and let him wake up on his own. I’m sure that I will hear all about it later.” She rolls her eyes.
“Where are we going?” I ask as she tugs me toward the admin building.
“I’m hungry.” She shrugs.
“You’re always hungry.” I chuckle but can’t deny I am starving as well. Magical training always makes me hungry, and right now, I wouldn’t care if it’s just about eating my feelings.
“I am,” she agrees, unashamed. “It takes a lot of fuel for my metabolism.”
“Sure, go with that.” I shake my head.
We continue through the woods until we get to the admin building. I’m so lost in thought I don’t notice a frazzled Professor Cross until he’s practically barreling into me.
I jump back out of the way. “Sorry, Mr. Cross. I didn’t see you there.”
“No problem, Beth.” He doesn’t even stop to talk as he hurries away.
“Weird. I wonder what’s going on with him.” I frown at Raven.
She shrugs. “Maybe he’s just in a hurry.”
