He’s covered from head to toe and the hood is pulled low so I can’t see his face. It’s creepy as fuck.

Jayden nods to Charon and gets in the boat without a problem but as I step forward with the drachma in my hand, the man steps in my way, blocking me from the boat.

“I have payment for the ferry,” I say with a frown.

The hood of his robe shakes back and forth as he points a bony finger back the way we came.

I turn to Adrian with a raised brow. “Are these the wrong coins?”

“No, I got the correct ones. I don’t think this is about the wrong payment,” Adrian says.

Raven steps up next to me, gripping her ax.

“Orpheus said that we may have a problem with Charon letting us in.” She shrugs.

“Charon, what is the holdup?” Jayden’s authoritative voice has the man turning to him and bowing his head low.

“He’s not letting us on the boat.” I raise a brow at Jayden.

No wonder he’s so egotistical; there is literally an entire realm that caters to whatever he wants.

“Let them pass, Charon. My father has requested their assistance.” Jayden crosses his arms over his chest.

Charon shakes his head again, pointing back to the entrance.

“It’s not like we can go back there. We had to block it to stop demons from escaping.” I throw my hands up in frustration.

“Um, guys?” Raven says, panicked. “There are more demons coming. We need to go.”

“Charon, take the payment and let’s go,” Jayden shouts. “My father will not be pleased if you don’t.”

The man holds out his hand and steps to the side reluctantly.

Jayden holds his hand out to me as I pass the coin to the ferryman and assists me in getting into the small rickety boat.

How the hell are we all going to fit without sinking this? I don’t particularly want to go for a swim in the River Styx.

“I don’t think it will hold us,” I whisper, sitting next to Jayden.

“Don’t worry, it will hold. It’s looked like this for millennia.” He bumps my shoulder.

Raven and Adrian sit across from us, still with their weapons at the ready. Charon pushes off the shore and a roar of anger fills the space as demons run up to the riverbank.

Adrian nocks an arrow and lets it fly into the demon’s eye. The ugly lizard demon bursts into flames.

Charon stares silently out into the darkness. The cavern is huge. The rock walls glitter in the low light.

I jump as a splash sounds next to me. “What the fuck was that?”

“It’s called the river of souls for a reason, Beth.” Raven rolls her eyes.

“Yeah, I would have preferred no answer to that one.” I shudder and scoot closer to Jayden, away from the edge.

Jayden wraps his arm around my waist so I can get closer in the tiny boat.

“I have never had a problem crossing the Styx,” Jayden says.

Did he just jinx us?
