“What’s wrong?” Raven asks, panicked.

“Beth is seriously injured,” Jayden calls back and uses his shadows to jump to me.

My arms give out and my knees weaken, sending me crashing back to the ground with a grunt.

“It hurts,” I cry.

Jayden scoops me up into his arms and jumps behind a tree. He slides down the trunk to sit down with my broken body cradled in his arms.

“Where’s the medicine?” he asks, grabbing for my battered backpack.

“I can’t. Too soon,” I mumble into his chest.

I can’t take that stuff again too soon. No matter how much pain I’m in.

“You have to. You’re too injured to heal normally from this,” Jayden growls angrily.

“The healer said no,” I mumble, snuggling in close to him.

“I don’t give a fuck what the healer said, Beth. You’re fucking dying.” Jayden pulls me closer with one arm while he searches for the small bottle in my pack.

A battle cry startles me. Raven. What’s going on with them? Are they okay?

“Take the fucking medicine, Beth. We need your electricity here,” Raven shouts.

Shit. She’s right. They need me to destroy the fucking golem.

The ground rumbles again and Jayden nearly drops the bottle onto the rocky ground at our feet.

“Fine,” I mumble and stick my tongue out for Jayden.

His eyes heat before he shakes his head and puts three drops of the red liquid on my tongue.

My back arches and a cry of pain erupts from me as the bones in my ribs snap and fuse back together.

Jayden’s arms tighten around me as I scream in agony.

“Jayden, shut her up,” Raven yells but it sounds far away. “I can’t hold him off.”

“Beth, I know it hurts, baby, but I need you to stop screaming. You’re bringing attention to us,” Jayden says and jumps us to a different tree.

“I can’t, hurts,” I mumble through my piercing screams.

The tissue and muscle knit back together agonizingly slowly.

“Jayden,” Raven barks.

A strangled sound leaves Jayden before he crashes his lips down on mine, muffling my screams.

His tongue invades my mouth, shocking me completely, and the screams die in my throat as a tiny moan takes their place.

I’m still in searing pain but Jayden is like a balm on my battered body. My bloody hand fists the front of his shirt, pulling him even closer.

His tongue explores my mouth in a languid movement until I can’t remember what I was screaming about or anything but being in Jayden’s arms and kissing him.

“What the fuck, guys?” Raven says angrily as she dives out of the way of the meaty fist.

The ground shakes as Jayden breaks the kiss.
