“All good now?” he asks, setting me on my feet.

“Yeah,” I say, breathless.

A roar splits the air at the same time Raven screams.

“Watch out.” Raven dives to the side and right into Adrian, taking him to the ground.

A foot stomps down where they were just standing and I can’t see them anywhere.

“Raven.” I move from the circle of Jayden’s arms, but before I can race out from behind the tree, Jayden wraps his arms around me, pulling me back.

“Stop. They are fine.”

The golem turns in our direction and I curse softly. I just gave up our location.

The tree we are hiding behind is uprooted by a rocky fist and the creepy smile is back on the golem’s face as it stares down at us.

Before I can even scream, the tree is hurtling toward us.

This is so fucked. My life flashes before my eyes as the tree barrels down on us.

Jayden groans. “This is not what I imagine when I think of you on top of me.”

I swat at his chest and roll off him.

How the fuck are we still alive?

“Seriously, Jayden? That’s what you say when we nearly died?” I grumble.

“I’m trying to lighten the situation,” he says with a cough.

The tree that fell on us surrounds us but somehow, we managed not to get pinned by the branches.

“Are you okay?” I ask Jayden.

“Yeah. Let’s kill this bastard.” He rolls to his side and shoves branches and leaves out of his way.

He reaches down for my hand and I grab it gratefully. He halls me to my feet and I dust my pants off.

There’s a tear in my shirt but the pink skin is no longer torn open. I’m covered in my own blood and grimace as I touch my charm around my neck.

“Where’s my backpack?” I ask with wide eyes.

“Fuck,” Jayden whispers. “I left it behind the other tree.”

I turn to the other tree, but it’s no longer there. The only thing there is a huge hole. The bag had some of our food and medicines in it and now it’s gone.

“It’s gone. What the hell are we going to do?” I ask.

“We need to help Raven first.” Jayden points to where Raven and Adrian are fighting off the giant, but they aren’t very effective.

I touch the necklace again and the whip unfurls in my hand. “Let’s get this bastard and get the fuck out of here.”

“Agreed,” Jayden says and holds his hand out.

He helps me over the branches as we pick our way out of the wreckage of the tree. I’m so glad this happened in the underworld and not in our realm.
