He already knows too much and I’m exhausted from having to deal with him.
“C’mon, Beth.” A meaty hand grips my arm, turning me around.
“Dax, don’t touch me,” I growl. “Don’t you think you have done enough?”
“Sorry, I just want to protect you,” he mumbles.
“Are you hearing yourself right now? Who is going to protect me from you and Jayden’s bullshit?” I rip my arm from his grasp and spin on my heel and storm away.
The audacity of that overgrown toddler, thinking that he needs to protect me like I haven’t been doing just fine on my own.
Raven catches up to me easily. “Should we check the cafeteria? It’s lunchtime; maybe the headmistress is there.”
“Probably heard what happened this morning and decided that she needs to keep an eye on the barbarians.” I shake my head but change course for the cafeteria.
“One of the barbarians is still trailing us and it looks like he has steam coming out of his ears.” She giggles.
“Gods give me patience.” I sigh.
We are going to have another fight on our hands when we finally find the headmistress. Hopefully this time I don’t end up the one who suffers for it.

Iscan the cafeteria and groan when I see Jayden and Adrian having lunch at my table. “They just decided to stop and eat while we are supposed to be looking for Rebecca?”
Raven turns in the direction I’m staring and sighs. “Well, we can’t eat the food in the underworld so it makes sense to eat when we have a chance and not waste our food for the mission.”
She’s not wrong. I grab a tray and go down the line, grabbing some sandwiches. We could use something to snack on through the drive to LA. Traffic there is horrible and we could end up in it for hours.
“Do you see the headmistress anywhere?” I ask and Raven shakes her head.
“I say we eat and see if she shows up. If not, we might need to go to the staff quarters again.” She adds some potato salad on her plate.
We carry our trays over to the table and sit across from the guys. “Decided to eat before we go?”
“We better or we will waste the limited supply we have,” Jayden responds.
I nod and wrap two of the sandwiches in my napkin and set them in my bag. Jayden raises an eyebrow. “What?”
“You’re hoarding food now?”
“I have seen the way you two eat.” I point my remaining sandwich at him and Raven.
“Hey, why am I in this?” she scoffs.
“Because we have seen the way you eat.” Jayden chuckles.
“It takes a lot of energy to pull an ax out of thin air.” She pouts.
“In all seriousness, I just think we should be prepared to hit a bunch of traffic on the way to the portal.” I shrug and take a bite of my sandwich.
“That’s true,” Adrian says thoughtfully and glances at the food line like he’s thinking about grabbing some extras himself.
“Have you guys seen Rebecca?” I ask, scanning the cafeteria.
“No, we thought she might be here, but I haven’t seen her.” Jayden pops a chip in his mouth and chews slowly. There’s a black spot forming under his eye from Dax’s fist, and I hide a wince.
“We figured the same but saw you eating and figured it was a good idea to eat before we head out too,” I say and take another bite of my sandwich.
