The ticker across the bottom of the screen flashes across it warning the residence of missing jungle cats and to be cautious.

I flinch. “Shit. They noticed the cats are missing already?”

Raven looks over at the TV. “How could they possibly know that when all the animals were running rampant?”

“Fucking hell. We need to go.” I widen my eyes at the others and whisper in horror, “They got me on camera.”

“They got us all on camera. Look at my hands.” Jayden is already getting up.

I hate this.

The food is so good, and I have to leave it behind because of a mortal’s cell phone video.

“We’ll get something on the road, Beth,” Jayden says. “We need to get out of the city before every monster within a ten-mile radius is on us.”

He puts his hand on my lower back, and I flinch away, not daring to look at his eyes because I know I will see hurt there.

I’m just not comfortable after what happened in New Mexico. Not sure if I ever will be.

The tiny seer’s words to Jayden come back to me.“Don’t give up on what you want most. It’s closer than you think.”

Was she talking about me? Am I what Jayden wants most?

If that were true, then he wouldn’t have let Mia hang all over him for months.

No. There must be something else he wants.

I’m in a daze as we get to the car.

Jayden is holding my door open for me, trying to catch my gaze, but I keep my eyes on the ground.

I don’t know what’s going on with me.

Why can’t I let the Mia thing go?

I’m still hurting. My trust has been broken, but he’s slowly earning it back.

I’m just not there yet.

We’re nearly out of town when Raven pokes her head between the seats and leans her arm on the headrest of my seat.

“So, I have a question, Jayden.” She smiles deviously, and I groan.

What is she up to?

“What, Raven?” he asks, resigned, probably knowing exactly what she’s going to ask.

“What is it that you want most? Annie was pretty adamant that you not give up.” She grins.

Jayden glances at me out of the corner of his eye.

I zap Raven.

“Ow, bitch,” she grumbles, rubbing at the spot on her arm.

Greyson pulls her back into her seat. “Babe, leave them alone.”

My cheeks heat as Jayden glances over again and smirks at my blush.
