He collapses onto me and quickly rolls to the side, pulling me into him and spooning me.
“Jesus fuck,” he whispers into my hair.
“I never took you for someone who liked pain.” I giggle.
“It’s not painful when you zap me when we’re like this. It’s a jolt, but it’s stimulating. It’s exhilarating.” He kisses my temple.
“So when I’m angry at you, it hurts, and when we’re like this, it feels good? Weird.” I run my fingers teasingly over his arm, sparking them over his skin.
The hair on his arm stands on end.
Jayden growls, pulling me in closer. “If you plan to get any sleep tonight, I suggest you stop doing that.”
I giggle, turning around in his arms, and press a chaste kiss to his lips.
“Good night, Jayden.” I lay my head down on his chest and close my eyes.
How did we end up getting close like this?
What happens when this mission is over, and we’re back at the academy?
Will he pull the same things? Can I really trust his pretty words?

Ichew my lip nervously. “I’m a little concerned with how uneventful the drive has been.”
Raven shifts in her seat. “Don’t jinx it. Just be grateful.”
“Aren’t you the slightest bit concerned about why the monsters and ancient deities haven’t attacked us in at least twelve hours?” I ask with a raised brow.
I glance over my shoulder at Raven, and she shrugs. The reprieve was nice, but my gut says that it’s a terrible hint at what’s to come.
The eight-hour trip was quiet.
“Everyone we have talked to said it’s only getting more dangerous, so why is it so quiet?” I ask.
Jayden stares out the windshield at the base of the mountain. “I don’t know. We should be wary of the mountains though.”
“You don’t think they’re all at the academy, do you?” I ask.
If all the monsters are converging on the academy, will we be too late to save them? Can the academy hold strong with all the monsters attacking their wards?
Jayden squeezes my knee. “Don’t borrow trouble, Beth. There’s nothing we can do but keep moving forward.”
Raven huffs. “We need to find the damn muses’ crowns, too.”
I roll my eyes. She’s been complaining about the muses since we got them out of their clutches last night. She wants nothing to do with helping them.
She, out of all of us, is the least happy with this little detour.
Jayden shakes his head and opens the door to step out. “It was the only way to get them to stop and get you guys back.”
We have told Raven this repeatedly. It hasn’t really stuck yet.
“C’mon. We need to get this over with so we can get the Hermes kids back to the academy and save it.” I push my door open and stalk toward Jayden.
It’s beautiful here. Green forests and trees. The thick foliage covers the ground around the trail.
