We catch up to Tristan out in the parking lot talking to another huge shifter and looking truly annoyed.
“Boss, we are at a loss. It won’t stop, no matter how much we try to make it drop,” the huge shifter says.
“They aren’t even good at rhymes.” Raven giggles, and Tristan snaps his head in our direction.
“Tell me you didn’t get too close to that fucking thing too,” he growls. “I said no one else goes near it.”
I chuckle. “I think you already know the answer to that.”
This is absolutely ridiculous.
Tristan scrubs a hand over his face. “I’m surrounded by idiots and smart-asses.”
Jayden crosses his hands over his chest, glaring at the alpha. “Hey, don’t forget you asked for our help. We can leave right now, and you will never be able to help your people, and they will drive you insane for the rest of your life.”
“I like that plan much better,” Greyson agrees, stepping up next to Jayden. “I mean, he did try to blackmail me into this.”
“All right, guys, that’s enough.” I push between the two of them. “We just need to get to the car and get the shell, then you can show us where the fountain is.”
“A shell?” Tristan asks warily.
I really do think that he thinks I’m insane now.
I shrug. “It was a gift from someone we helped along the way. It will help me contact the academy.”
I loop my arm through Raven’s as we walk back to the place we parked the car, past the creepy statue. Its eyes still follow me, and I shudder, wondering what the hell is up with it.
“You are a strange group.” Tristan hurries to catch up. “How did you get mixed up with whatever they are?”
“Raven is my mate.” Greyson shrugs. “I know what they are, and though their world surprises me, it’s not much different from ours.”
“Whatever you say,” Tristan grumbles. “As long as we can get this curse off my guys and I never have to hear another rhyme as long as I live, I will be happy.”
We make it to the car, and I grab my bag with the shell and all the other gifts I have been given on this trip and throw the strap over my shoulder.
“Where’s this fountain?” I ask.
“About an hour’s drive southwest to the base of the mountains,” Tristan says.
Jayden curses. “We have to backtrack two hours. We should just call Adrian, see what he says, and save ourselves a trip.”
He raises a brow at me when I shake my head.
“We can call Adrian first, but either way, I have a feeling we’ll have to go to the fountain.” I fumble in the bag to pull out the shell, trying to remember what the Nereid told me to do.
Just speak the person’s name into the shell, right?
“Why don’t you just use a cell phone?” Tristan asks, waving his phone in front of me.
Jayden pushes the alpha back, slapping his hand away from me. “Shit. Fuck. Get that thing out of here.”
“What the hell, man?” Tristan asks, and his eyes glow as he widens his stance.
“We can’t use electronics. They’re beacons for damn monsters,” Jayden growls. “Even being this close to one is dangerous. It’s why the shell was an amazing gift.”
I scan the parking lot for any threats. There have been phones around us every time we stopped, I’m sure, but never as close as when Tristan tried to hand me his.
This could be very bad news if we’re attacked with all the humans around. They can’t see the monsters, but they can see us.
