“We haven’t had to fight off monsters in front of so many humans before,” I say, paranoid a Minotaur or something is going to jump out at me.

Raven’s hands clench at her sides. “It will be fine. Maybe we should just go.”

Something glints in the sky, and I squint.

That isn’t… It can’t be.

The first squawk slices through the quiet, and I curse as the flapping of wings fills the air. Either they were brought back, or we didn’t get them all.

“Take fucking cover,” I scream, diving into the passenger seat of the car.

Tristan laughs. “What the hell? It’s just birds.”

I scowl at him. If he thinks they’re just birds, he can hang out with them out there in the parking lot.

Idiot.

“Take a look again with your enhanced vision, dipshit,” Greyson growls, pulling him behind another car. “Notice anything strange about those birds?”

Something falls from the sky, and the ground sizzles, corroding a hole in the asphalt.

“Shit, no one said anything about acid shit,” Jayden shouts from a few feet away.

“Did you ever pay attention in ancient history?” I yell when I notice more shit falling from the sky. “Incoming.”

“So they changed tactics this time,” Raven grumbles as she crawls into the back seat. “I really don’t want to be known for being murdered by bird shit.”

“Same. How do we get out of this one?” I chew my lip, watching the sky. “They’re too high up to kill with a sword.”

“Beth, lightning,” Jayden screams as shit pelts all around us.

The smell of poison and sulfur fill the air, and the sound of crumbling cement and sizzling and cracking as it hits the ground.

“They’re too high up,” I yell back. “Jayden, watch out.”

Something lands on his arm, and his blood-curdling bellow cracks through the silence.

Something in me snaps. My lightning roars through every vein in my body. Clouds darken the sky, but all I see are those damn birds. All I hear is the buzzing of my magic in my ears.

Almost on autopilot, I direct the lightning toward the birds. Faintly, I think I hear someone screaming, but all I can focus on is the energy zapping the damn birds out of the sky.

My power is draining quickly, but I manage to get them all and then slump into the seat of the car. Everything sounds like it’s underwater.

“Beth? Beth, are you okay?”

Someone’s trying to talk to me, just as everything goes black.

“Beth.”

My cheek stings, and I sit up, ready to zap whoever just slapped me. Blinking in confusion, I look at all the chaos and destruction around me, and memories assault me.

“Jayden, where is he?” I jump from the car, nearly tripping in a hole that was corroded by the birds.

Raven steadies me so I don’t fall. “We need your help. Where is that shit the healer gave you?”

I stumble my way to a pale Jayden. His arm is sizzling.
