Tristan stands back up and squares his shoulders. “My apologies, friend. I didn’t realize she was yours.”
My eyes snap to the misogynistic alpha. “I belong to no one, and I never will.”
Electricity crackles beneath my skin.
He sniffs the air. “You smell of ozone. Interesting.” He taps his lip with a finger.
I scowl at him. That is not something a girl wants to hear. What the fuck does ozone even smell like?
“C’mon. Let’s go. We can stop at a drive-through in New Mexico or something.” Greyson starts to get up, but Tristan puts a hand on his shoulder.
“You don’t just get to leave without a punishment for trespassing.” Tristan grins.
Greyson groans. “C’mon, Tristan. It was a misunderstanding.”
This is so not good. Why is it that every time we stop, we’re delayed?
“Look, let me level with you,” Tristan whispers, leaning in closer. “Something weird is going on here, and I think they may be able to help.”
“What kind of weird are we talking here?” Raven asks with a cocked eyebrow.
“We found a fountain in the desert,” he says. “It’s in a kind of oasis, and anyone that gets too close to it starts rhyming and can’t stop. Three of my wolves think they are damn poets now, but everything they say rhymes.”
I burst into loud laughter, only having to take one guess to know who is behind that little piece of magic.
“It’s not funny. It’s supremely annoying,” Tristan growls as I try to get myself under control.
Even Jayden is grinning.
“What am I missing?” Greyson asks in response to Raven’s giggles.
“Apollo.” I laugh. “That has the god of poetry’s signature all over it.”
“Apollo… Are you high? The Greek god Apollo?” Tristan frowns, drumming his fingers on the table.
“Can you take us to the fountain?” I ask him, moving to stand, but he’s in my way. “I may have someone I can call who can tell me how to fix your wolves.”
“You’re not going to answer my question?” He looms over me again, and the sleazy feeling from before is back.
Jayden growls.
I peek out of the corner of my eye at him, and my eyes widen.
His shadows are swirling around his hands, and he shoves them in his lap under the table. His blue eyes are still glowing with power.
I nudge him with my elbow. “Jayden, chill. The humans will see.”
“What the fuck are you?” Tristan shakes his head, finally taking a step back with his hands up in surrender.
“If I told you, I would have to kill you.” I grin at him, stepping to the side to let Raven out of the booth. “Now are you going to take us to the fountain or what?”
“Sure, we have the road blocked off so no one else will go up there and get fucking cursed,” he grumbles, turning on his heel and walking from the diner.
“Well, so much for dinner,” I grumble just as my stomach growls.
Jayden chuckles and pats my shoulder lightly. “We’ll get food after we help the people that were ‘cursed’ by the fountain. What the hell did Apollo do?”
He sighs, scrubbing his hand over his face.
