“Do you guys feel like we’re being watched?” I scan the room, and there is not one friendly face other than the hostess’s. “What the hell?”
Greyson sniffs the air and groans. “Shit.”
“What? What do you smell, wolfboy?” Jayden asks, suddenly on alert.
“First of all, don’t fucking call me that. We’re in another pack’s territory. I smell my kind all over this place.”
“Shouldn’t you have smelled that before we walked in and were seated?” Raven growls at him.
I guess she’s not done being mad at him.
Greyson shakes his head. “I wasn’t aware the town was claimed by a pack. I thought it was safe. It had to have happened in the past few months. It was neutral territory my whole life.”
“Well, it isn’t anymore, Greyson.” A tall man looms over our table, and I just know that this is the alpha.
He has that big-dick energy about him that most alphas have. Not that I have met many alpha wolves.
“Tristan. So you took over new territory, then.” Greyson nods. “Look, we don’t want any trouble. If I would have known you claimed the territory, then I would have let you know I was passing through.”
Tristan glares at him. “That’s no excuse, and I am officially alpha of all of Arizona, so you have been trespassing for a while, it seems.”
“Look, we’re really sorry for trespassing in your territory, alpha Tristan,” I say, trying to diffuse the situation. “We just stopped to get some food, and then we will be on our way.”
Something in his eyes tells me that making my presence known is a supremely bad idea.
“Well, hello, gorgeous. What’s your name?” He leans over as if to shake my hand.
His nostrils flare as he inhales deeply.
“And what are you?” He cocks his head to the side.
“My name is Beth.” I hold out a hand to him to shake, but he wraps his long fingers around mine and kisses my knuckles.
I fake a smile even though the attention feels off and slimy against my skin. This man gives me the same creep factor that the statue did.
Is he responsible for the statue? I don’t think shifters have the kind of magic that can animate statues, though.
His eyes light with mischief. “What are you doing with this loser? You should stay. We could have some fun.”
“No, sorry, we have to get to the East Coast. We have some…uh…sick friends over there, and they need us,” I lie, but I suck at lying.
Jayden winces, so I kick him under the table.
“Ow, damn it, Beth.”
Oh, the boy is getting zapped as soon as we get back to the car.
I glare at the idiot for opening his big mouth.
“What are you three? You don’t smell like wolves, but you also don’t smell human.” Tristan’s intrigue, I have a feeling, is not something we want piqued. “So much power.”
He runs his finger down my cheek, and Jayden growls.
Greyson puts his arm out, holding him back.
“Don’t touch her,” Jayden grits out.
I scowl at him. Even though I don’t want the greasy touch on my skin, Jayden doesn’t get to play the jealous boyfriend.
