She lunges for him and wrestles him in the back seat to get the cotton in his ears.
“What the fuck is going on, Beth? Why did you shove cotton in my ears?” Jayden yells and reaches up to remove the cotton.
I slap his hand away. “Sirens are singing. At least, we think it’s sirens. We don’t know for sure because we can’t hear them.”
“Don’t listen to her, Jayden. They just want us to meet them at the lake. They aren’t monsters.” Greyson shouts and kicks the back of Jayden’s seat, sending him forward a bit.
Raven jumps on him, trying to get to his ears. “Stop fighting me.”
Jayden reaches up again, and I smack him.
“Don’t fucking touch it, Jayden. I mean it. Find somewhere to turn around so we can get the hell out of here.” I glare at him, but he’s in a trance again.
“It’s getting louder. The cotton isn’t working.” He’s struggling against the sound, trying to do what I said, but the strain shows on his face as he frowns. “We’re almost there.”
“Fucking hell,” Raven yells as Greyson snarls, pinning her to the back seat.
“Shit. Greyson, what the hell are you doing? She’s your mate, jackass,” I yell, smacking him on the back of his head.
He glares up at me, his eyes glowing. His wolf is close to losing control.
“We’re losing them, B. We need a new plan.” Raven is still struggling to get her arms free as Greyson continues to pin her.
The car stops and turns off.
Jayden doesn’t even take the keys out of the ignition before getting out.
“Jayden, stop,” I scream, but he doesn’t acknowledge my words.
Greyson stops his assault on Raven and gets out of the car too, following closely behind a dazed Jayden who reaches up and removes the cotton from his ears.
This is fucking bad.
“Yeah, new plan,” I growl and grab the keys from the ignition and my sword from the floorboard. “We kill the fucking bitches.”
They do not get to have Jayden. Those dumb bitches are going to pay for crossing me.
Raven grins. “Let’s kill some shit, then.”
A Nereid appears next to me as if out of thin air, and I jump back slightly, holding my sword up before I realize she’s a water spirit, not a siren.
The girl shudders. “Please do. I will be forever grateful. Those nasty creatures are polluting my waters with the bones and leftovers of the men they slaughter.”
Her cerulean hair shines in the bright sunlight, making her light-blue skin look even paler in comparison.
Raven gags. “That is fucking disgusting.”
I know the feeling. The word leftovers will never mean the same thing to me again.
The Nereid’s lip wobbles a little. “It is, and the lake is my home.”
“Well, they are currently trying to snack on my wolf shifter and a friend, so we will get rid of them for you, but we can’t guarantee they won’t come back. Lately, monsters just aren’t staying dead,” Raven says, and I pat the girl on the shoulder.
“We got this.” I start to jog to catch up with the guys.
They’re marching in a daze over the rocks to a cave that’s off the beaten path.
The stench of death and decay hits me like a freight train. “Oh my god. That is fucking sick.”
