“Wait a second.” Jayden turns the music down and opens his window.

“What is that?” Greyson leans toward his own window.

I turn to look at Raven, whose brows scrunch down in confusion. I turn the radio completely off and listen carefully, but there’s nothing.

“Do you hear anything?” I whisper.

Raven shakes her head, staring at the guys.

“You don’t hear it?” Greyson mumbles in a daze.

Jayden pulls off at the next exit.

“Jayden, where are you going?” I ask, but he ignores me.

“Greyson, give me the map.” Raven grabs for it, but he yanks it away from her.

“No, we’re going the right way,” Greyson mumbles, keeping it out of her reach.

“What the fuck, babe?” she yells, but he ignores her and rolls down his window.

“Fuck, that’s water up ahead,” I shout at Raven.

She looks up, grimacing. I slap my hands over Jayden’s ears, but he tries to pry my hands off his head.

“You don’t think…” Raven trails off at my nod.

“Jayden, it’s sirens. You have to fight it, or they will kill you,” I growl in his ear and grab the first-aid kit to see if I can stuff some cotton or something in his ears.

“Here.” I throw cotton balls over my shoulder at Raven in the back and lunge at Jayden to put the cotton in his ears, but he tries to slap my hands away.

When I glance back, Raven is having similar issues with Greyson, who’s batting her hands away.

“Why can’t we hear them?” I ask no one in particular.

Raven shrugs. “I’m guessing it’s because sirens were said to lead sailors to their watery deaths, and women weren’t sailors then, so we’re immune.”

“I’m gonna zap them,” I tell her, and she nods.

Neither guy reacts, completely entranced by the sirens. We pass a sign that says Lake Havasu, and I groan. I should have noticed we were headed toward water way sooner than now.

I fill my palm with electricity and send a tiny bit to each of the guys.

Jayden groans. “Fuck, Beth, what is that for?”

“Cover your ears,” I scream, shoving cotton in his ears.

“What the fuck is going on?” he asks, bewildered, looking around at where we are. “Why are we off the highway headed to Lake Havasu?”

He scrunches his brows in confusion.

“Take the cotton out, Jayden. They want us to meet them at the lake,” Greyson says with a dreamy smile.

I zap him again.

“Fuck, that shit hurts,” he complains, rubbing at his chest.

“Do it, Raven. Now,” I shout.
