Her brows furrow. “What’s wrong with your stomach?”
I start wringing my fingers. “I’m a little nervous to wear the costume. I mean, I know he remembers it. It’s just what if he thinks it’s weird?”
“Em, I guarantee he’s not going to think it’s weird. I know you guys have an arrangement, but Spencer seems to genuinely like you—and literally everything you do,” she says, squeezing my arm. “Don’t stress too much about it and instead stress about what fresh hell awaits us at the Haunted House & Trail.”
I laugh, albeit nervously. “Gee, thanks. I might need two seltzers now.”
Mia smiles. “That can be arranged.”
Twenty minutes later, Mia and I are sitting on the couch, drinks in hand when we hear a knock. I might slightly panic knowing that Spencer is about to see me in this costume again. My gaze swings to Mia, wide and worried, and she stands up.
“Come on. You can stand behind me if you want.”
“With any luck, he’ll be too occupied with your outfit to care about mine.”
Mia shakes her head, not believing me. “Sure, Em.” She looks through the peephole then shouts, “Clark, come to the front before I open the door.”
I shake my head with a laugh, he’s clearly like me and tends to stand behind others. He must do what she says because she swings the door open and strikes a pose.
The first thing I hear is Spencer’s deep laughter, followed by Beckett saying, “Sweet Jesus.”
“You like?” Mia asks Beckett.
“I thought when you said to dress up like Clark Kent that you’d be Lois Lane. NotLex Luther.”
Yep. Mia is Lex Luther. Bald cap and all. Walking in on her blending the cap into her makeup had my jaw on the ground.
“So, you hate it?” she taunts with a fake pout.
Seeing her pout makes Beckett quickly backtrack, “No. God no. I shouldn’t have assumed you’d be Lois. Lex is actually so much better. And I think everyone who sees youwill agree.”
She grins. “I’m just fucking with you, Clark. Even if you hate it, I’m rocking this bald cap. Might make it my new thing.”
“Well, you’re pulling off the no hair look. If you ever have a Britney moment, at least you know you’ll still look hot.”
For once, Mia is speechless.
And I know it’s not because he said she was hot. It’s because he referenced a moment in pop culture and if there’s something Mia loves, it’s all things pop culture.
Deciding to throw myself in the spotlight to give these two a break. I step out from around her, and when I do, I gasp.
Spencer is wearing the Daredevil costume.
“Well, isn’t this just perfect,” Spencer says, dimple out on full blast.
“I was worried you’d find this a bit weird, but I guess not since you had the same idea.”
His hand comes up, rubbing the back of his neck. “Actually, this is my one and only costume. I’ve only worn it one other time and that was Halloween the year after.”
Snorting, I admit, “Then it actually is perfect because I forgot that we were told to wear costumes until a few hours ago. I happened to find this in one of the many boxes in my closet.”
Spencer pulls me into his arms. “Like it was meant to be then, huh?”
“That’s what I said,” Mia shouts.
He chuckles at her before kissing my forehead and asks, “Are you ladies ready? I don’t know how bad traffic will be and we should be heading there.”
Mia nods and we lock up.
