AshLynn takes a large gulp of coffee. “I amnotapologizing. I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Well, still, it’s going to be awkward if you two are fighting, don’t you think?”
“I don’t care. He’s in the wrong. He’s always in the wrong.”
“What happened?”
“He won’t agree to work for Daddy and I want my inheritance.”
“What does one have to do with the other?” I ask.
“Mommy won’t let me have it unless I’m married and he takes the job with Daddy.”
“Wow. That’s pretty—”
“I know,” she interrupts. “Mason is being really lame. I’d be set if he’d just do this one little thing.”
“I was going to say that’s pretty controlling of Cassandra.”
“Controlling? Not even. She’s going to give me the money—all he has to do is agree to take the job and go to work every day.”
“And what do you do while he does that?” I ask.
“Same as I do now.”
“So, let me get this straight. Mason takes the job with Daddy and goes to work every day?”
“Yep.”
“And as long as he does that, Cassandra gives you access to your trust.”
“Exactly.”
“But Mason doesn’t want to do that.”
“No.” She sighs. “And he doesn’t want to move to Southlake. The whole thing is so ridiculous.”
“I’m surprised you want to stay in Texas.”
“Wills, in Southlake I’m amazing. People know us, they know Daddy, they do things for me, I’m important. In Texas, we are rich. And let’s face it, most people adore me.”
I scoff at her (lack of) humility.
“But in Washington, no one knows me. I have no friends. There’s no fan club. I’m not the society princess with Mommy as queen. And if you look at some of the houses around here, not yours of course, you can tell you have to be way richer than we are to be rich here. And I still want to be rich.”
“So, it’s about money?” I ask.
“Of course it’s about money. It’s always about money.”
“You’re willing to give up the man you love just for money?”
“Who said anything about love?”
I shake my head. Certain I didn’t hear her correctly.
“You’re getting married,” I hiss.
“And?”
