I knock on the door and wait for it to open. It doesn’t take long.
“Why’re you here?” Mila stands at the door in pajamas, looking languid and lacking spirit. Damn. What’s happened to the enthusiastic girl?
She doesn’t look well at all, and I have the urge to pull her to me and cuddle her. But I hold my urge. This is my friend’s house. Although John isn’t home, I still feel his presence.
“May I come in?” I ask.
“Y-yeah,” she mumbles and steps aside.
“You don’t look well,” I say when she closes the door. “If you’re sick, you need to see a doctor.”
“I’m not sick,” she says, avoiding my eyes.
“Then what’s wrong?”
Mila plops down onto the sofa next to me and covers her face in her hands for a moment. When she looks up, her eyes are filled with tears. “What’s wrong is I have to quit working for you.”
“What are you talking about?” I sit down next to her and pull her to me. “Are you stressed out? You’ve done well. You just need a little break.”
“It’s not that,” she pushes me away. “It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have…”
Her voice chokes with emotions, and tears stream down her cheeks.
“Shouldn’t have done what?”
“Made…made out with you. Adrianna recorded it,” she covers her face again.
The word Adrianna enrages me, although I’m not even surprised. I blink as I try to process the information. “Record? How?”
“I don’t know, but she showed me the video clip. Oh God. It was awful seeing myself like that.”
What the fuck?A chill runs down my spine as I recall the few occasions when I feel as if Adrianna was watching me. Didn’t she knock on my door when I was going to jerk off after I interviewed Mila? I’ve wondered why she would do that despite my telling her not to interrupt my nap.
Shit. It’s totally possible that she put a camera in my office. The woman has to be crazy to blackmail Mila using the evidence of her crime.
“What did she say to you, Mila?”
“She said she would post the video on social media and ruin Hudson’s reputation if I didn’t quit.”
What the fuck.I grit my teeth. “To hell she would,” I say. “She will go to jail first.”
“B-but she could still do what she said,” Mila says, her voice trembling. “She knows what she’s done is illegal.”
“It doesn’t matter,” I say. “Don’t stress yourself about it. She can’t destroy me just like that. She isn’t that powerful. Besides, what we’ve done isn’t illegal. It isn’t even wrong. We’re two consenting adults. You wanted it, didn’t you?”
Her cheeks turn pink for a moment and she nods. “I did. And I have no regrets. But she makes it look so filthy.”
“I know. I’m sorry, sweetheart,” I pull her to me and kiss her this time.
When we pull away, Mila smiles cheerfully. “I was silly to have reacted that way. I thought I had to start all over.”
I chuckle. “Yes, you were silly. But it’s normal to react that way. That vile woman made it look sordid between us. What you need to do now is to go back to Hudson Constructions with me, and I’ll fire her and file a police report.”
Mila nods with a grateful smile, and then she hooks her arms around me and stamps another kiss on my cheek. “Thank you for showing up. Gosh. I was actually thinking about going back to San Diego.”
“Thank God you didn’t because I was planning to invite you to dinner at my house,” I say in a gruff voice and plant another lingering kiss on her lips.
