Chapter 1
Kitty
I turn onto Malibu Road after driving for nearly an hour from downtown, toward Mike’s beach house.
I’ve been living in LA for nine months since I started school at USC. Before going home to Sunnyfield, I will stay with Mike for a week. I’m excited because I miss him a lot. Mike’s my dad’s best friend since their schooldays, and he’s like family to me. I haven’t even seen him once in the past year because he’s so busy. In fact, the last time I saw him was two years ago at my dad’s wedding.
When I see the contemporary house with large windows on top of a hill facing the Pacific Ocean, I gasp. It looks huge and luxurious. I knew Mike was rich, but I didn’t expect such extravagance. I’m renting a small room in a house near USC, and it’s insanely expensive. I can’t imagine how much such a splendid house costs.
Even my tabby Blondie is stunned by the surroundings. She was fretting and meowing all the way, even after I open the roof of the cat carrier. Now she’s quiet as she looks out of the window, her green eyes wide open. I pull up to the curb and call Mike.
A tall man in a black t-shirt and faded blue jeans descends the stairs next to the house. His black hair is thick with sprinkles of greys around the temples, and his eyes are as blue as the ocean below. Mike is an attorney, but he looks like an athlete from a distance and a movie star close up. He was the reason I chose to come to USC even though I was accepted to a few other top schools in the nation.
“Hey, Kitty!” Mike opens his arms as he gets close.
“Mike!” Leaving my suitcase and cat carrier on the ground, I run to Mike and hug him. He smells musky and manly. His hands on my back feel good.
“Little girl!” Mike smiles as he pulls away. His eyes sparkle as they travel along my body. “You’ve grown into a lovely young lady!”
I blush as I thank his compliment. The reason I didn’t arrive on time was because I spent nearly an hour to decide what to wear. I tried all the dresses in my wardrobe, and finally, I settled on a sexy floral chiffon blouse over shorts. The soft material flatters my curves and reveals a bit of my cleavage.
I was hoping Mike would like what he saw, but now I’m not sure because he doesn’t give me a second look. Does he perhaps think I’m fat? All his girlfriends in the past were tall and slender. I’m of average height and on the plump side. I should probably add jogging on the beach to my plan for the next week.
Mike’s house has a spacious living room with mostly windows on the walls facing the ocean, and it feels like a dream being there.
I haven’t had the chance to close my mouth when he shows me to my room upstairs. It’s not only bright and roomy but also has a view even better than downstairs. And there is a balcony.
“Is it okay if I put Blondie here?” I ask Mike.
“Of course,” he says. “Just make sure you two get along because I don’t want any cat-fight in my house.”
I giggle at his humor as Mike opens the door of the carrier and lets Blondie out. “Hello, Blondie, we meet again!” he says, stroking my kitty’s fur.
Blondie has been with me for about five years, ever since she was a kitten. She’s a reason I can’t live in the university dorms.
I’m happy to see Mike doesn’t mind having her in his house, but soon my happiness turns to jealousy. The way Blondie goes limp on the floor while purring under Mike’s touch makes me wish I were her.
Mike has his own law office nearby. Even though it’s a Sunday, he still has to meet with a client. “I’ll be back in about two hours, and I’ll take you to the beach and to dinner. In the meantime, you can rest or watch TV.”
“Why can’t I go to the beach by myself? It’s within walking distance.”
“You can’t go out alone. You don’t know your way and I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
I giggle. “Come on, Mike! It’s not like I’ve never been to the beach. I’m eighteen and a half. I know how to protect myself.”
He pauses for a moment. “Okay. But don’t talk to strangers, all right?”
I roll my eyes. “Sure.”
Chapter 2
Mike
I glance up at my balcony where Kitty is waving me goodbye. She leans against the railing, her curves clearly visible within the thin material of her blouse, and her long legs make it even harder for me not to think improper thoughts. Damn. I’m in trouble. I should’ve refused her when she told me she wanted to spend a week in my house. But then, I’ve been avoiding her long enough. She wanted to meet with me ever since she started USC but I kept postponing. I ran out of excuses in the end.
The girl is getting more beautiful every time I see her. True, I haven’t seen her for two years, but I still remember how good she looked at her dad John’s wedding. Her hazel eyes melted me the moment they fixed on me, and when I pulled her for a hug, I became hard. She was all soft and smooth, and it was all I could do to stop my hands from sliding down to feel her buns.
I can’t stop thinking about her as I drive. Kitty’s mom died when she was little, and John brought up the girl by himself with the help of his parents. I was his best friend, so naturally, I spent a lot of time with his princess of a daughter as well.
