My wolf charged forward, noting Natalie wasn’t behind me, and nailed a white wolf with black on its front two paws and the tip of his tail. He, too, exuded alpha waves, so between the three of us, it was all-consuming.

We tumbled to the ground, and Luca’s wolfbecamefree.

My wolf moved back, perceiving this alpha was pissed as hell, showing me his teeth and adding in the drips of saliva down his jaw. His eyes were on my wolf, which was amistake.

Luca charged him. In one fell swoop, he clawed the wolves gut, slicing him completely open. Luca didn’t stop there. He then went for the throat, tearing it out, then decided he needed to play around with the deadanimal.

Looking around, the wolves that had charged in were all down, and our wolves were allcomingback.

Natalie was standing off to the side, justwatching.

Pain ricocheted through my shoulderandpaws.

When I fell over, Luca shifted, coming to me inarush.

“Shift!” he yelled, and I listened, coming back to human form. His arms were around me, strong and comforting. “Shift back,” he said again, and I did. We did this four more times before I finally stayed human. The magic within us healed our wounds, and the only way to let the magic to take over fast was to repeatedly shift. Sometimes when we’re in that much pain, we forget. I was lucky Luca was there tohelpme.

“I’mgood.”

He smiled down at me. “Yeah, you’re damnperfect.”

“Hello?”

“Hey, Dad,” I said into the phone as I laid on the bed I sharedwithLuca.

There’s a rustling around on the other end of the phone like he’s moving. “How’s my little girldoing?”

Happiness filled me at his words. “Good.Reallygood.”

“I’m happy for ya,babygirl.”

“Dad, I’ve called Howls for the past few weeks, and every time I ask about my schedule, they tell me I don’t have one.” This had been bothering me for a while now, and my wishful thinking had come into play that my father was just giving me time to get settled in my new life. That wasn’t the case. As time passed, I got the distinct impression I was beingpushedout.

He sighed heavy. “It’s best if you don’t work there, and I got all the bookshandled.”

“Dad!” I was in complete shock that I popped up from the bed and began pacingtheroom.

“You have a new family, and you need to concentrate on them. That’s what a mate does, Caleigh. They leave their life behind and join the other pack, doing jobs for them. Youknowthis.”

“So, you’re going to cutmeout?”

“Out of our lives? No. Never. As for the business, it’s best this way. And Caleigh, youknowit.”

My heart hurt. This was the severance I was terrified of, because of the bargain. My family had said they’d take me back, but would they really after this? Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything I could doaboutit.

“Yeah. How’s Wolf comingalong?”

“Good. We’re opening next week. Everything is great, Caleigh.” Even though my heart hurt, happiness filled me at knowing I had helped my family. That I was able to fix the problems and let themliveeasy.

“I’m happy for ya, Dad.” A lump caught in my throat, and I cleared it. “Can you tell everyone Isaidhi?”

“Absolutely. You’ll have to come over for dinnersometime.”

The lump grew. “Yeah, I’dlikethat.”
