I reached for the door and Willow sobbed.

“Wyatt…don’t. Just say something…” she pleaded.

I paused, everyone in the room seemingly holding their breath. I turned and took in the scene. Skye was sweaty and exhausted, holding onto Aiden, who was also sweaty and exhausted and a little gray. Willow looked shattered, Mia didn’t look surprised in the slightest, and Rafe…

Well, Rafe looked the most disappointed out of all of them.

I opened my mouth to say something, but what could I say? Every time I tried to explain myself to Skye, I ruined it. The anger that’d been festering inside of me since my childhood was still there, and only Skye seemed to pull it out.

Not to mention…she’d rejected me. She’d just reaffirmed it in front of everyone.

I pulled the door, then almost cursed. I’d forgotten it was locked. Without a word, I unlocked the door and left the room. The door closing behind me echoed through the hall as if prison bars had just been slammed shut.

Chapter 50

Rafe

It’d only beenminutes since my dumbass best friend had left us and Willow had quickly cleared up her tears.

“So, Skyes. Wanna tell us why you know but don’t know who the fucking prince is?” Willow asked, sounding calm, though her eyes looked like they could start a fire.

Skye snorted. “He stalks me.”

Aiden wheezed a weak laugh. “I t-told you it was a m-man.” Skye ran her knuckles down Aiden’s cheek in such a sickeningly sweet display of affection, I was almost uncomfortable.

“I follow her,” I amended, raising my eyebrows at Aiden’s statement.

Mia glared. “I almost speared you.”

I clenched my jaw. She most certainly would have speared me if I hadn’t moved when I did. I wasn’t going to admit that to her, though.

“Seriously, though, why does Rafe stalk you?” Willow whisper-yelled. I almost smiled. Clearly the girls had rendered me as a non-threat, stalking accusations aside. Even Aiden was relatively relaxed as Skye continued to check him over.

“He’s one of my Links.” Skye said finally, and my heart-rate spiked. “I found out a few weeks ago. I didn’t tell y’all because…well, I was embarrassed about Wyatt rejecting me still. And I’m happy with Aiden. He’s more than enough for me.”

Skye paused, then shot me a nervous glance, but I only offered her an easy smile in return. I knew her comment about Aiden being enough for her had nothing to do with me, it was purely for Aiden. He had low self-esteem and was prone to feelings of worthlessness. She didn’t know me at all and yet she’d rightfully deduced that I wouldn’t need her reassurance in the way Aiden did.

God, she was fucking perfect for us. Wyatt was an idiot.

“We understand, Skye.” Willow reassured her.

“I don’t need to worry about him, do I?” Skye murmured, looking at me and then Willow.

“No,” I answered quickly, knowing exactly who she meant. “Wyatt’s frightened, but he would never put you in danger. That’s what landed him in this whole rejection mess to begin with. In his own twisted way, he thinks he’s protecting you.”

“He’s the only one she needs protecting from at this point,” Mia muttered. I snorted. Mia’s long-standing dislike for Wyatt had always been hilarious to me, especially since I couldn’t blame her.

“We have a problem, though.” I said, changing the topic as smoothly as possible. “If Lucille really did try to kill Aiden today –and I’m not saying I don’t believe him, I do– then that means she’s expecting him to be dead. If he’s not, and he never ends up in a hospital…she’s going to wonder what happened.”

“Lucille…knows…about S-Skye.” Aiden answered shakily. Skye bundled him in a soft pink blanket while he continued to tremble.

I almost frowned.

I wanted to be wrapped in one of her blankets.

Preferably with her beside me.

Or under me.
