Eloise’s eyes widened. “You don’t?”
Okay, so that didn’t work. How did he get himself in an even weirder bind? He thought about the answer some more.
“I mean, I do. I would, if I found the person I want to marry, but I haven’t met her yet.”
There, good save.Or is it?
But you have met her,his brain whispered.
And he already wanted Sahar more than he’d ever wanted anyone else.
“How do you find one?”
Jay blinked once, twice, three times. “Why’s this topic suddenly a concern of yours?”
“I don’t want you to be alone when I leave.”
Put a dagger straight through my chest, kid. It’d hurt less.
He smiled, trying to conceal the sadness in his voice to give her little brain some semblance of comfort. “I don’t want you to worry about me, baby. I’m fine.”
“But you live all by yourself.”
“Plenty of people live by themselves. It’s normal when you’re older.”
She pouted, the expression in her gaze breaking him further. “But what if you want toplay video games or watch a movie and there’s no one?”
It was a parent’s job to worry about their kid, not the other way around. “That’s what friends are for,” he answered, trying to ease her with a different approach.
“But when you find someone to marry, can I meet them, too?”
Picking up his glass of water, he gently tapped her nose. “Your approval is the most important one I’ll need, so, of course, I’ll introduce you.”
Her lips quirked upward, but the sadness in her eyes still lingered.
“Hey, how about you go get into your PJs, and we can play a whole level of the newShrekgame?”
Elatedly, she stuffed her remaining dinner into her mouth and bolted to her room while still chewing.
Thank God!
He flipped his phone back over from the table to quickly check his texts, surprised that there was one waiting for him from Sahar.
SAHAR
Finished reading ep 8 during intermission, literally lost my mind at Henry finding the letter from Katherine in his desk drawer. It hit me the first time, too, but the fact that you leave it at a cliffhanger here is going to make people FLIP. Also, please write the actual letter, Jay. I know you feel like it’s better without the audience knowing what’s inside, but can you at least show it to me!??!?
Jay laughed out loud. She was so fucking precious.
JAY
Maybe we can show the audience a snippet of it. But the full letter will be for your eyes only.
Her eyes only.He could think of countless other things he wanted for her eyes only.
SAHAR
YES! Try not to make me sob, though.
