“And Elizabeth is JD’s wife?” I ask. I’m trying to remember everyone’s names before I meet them.
“Yep. See, you’re getting it.”
I laugh, happy to be here with Brody. His space is comfy.
“I’m going to go clean out the fridge while you make yourself at home. I hadn’t planned on being gone for so long. I’m sure everything has expired. We’ll order takeout tonight, and then we’ll go get groceries tomorrow morning before we head to the baby shower.”
With the call to my parents still fresh in my mind, I decide to send them my location. They didn’t mention anything about Henry, so I suppose it would be okay. I’ve put them through enough torment. I also send it to my roommate’s phone, so she can send me the stuff I left behind in Paris.
Brody comes out of the kitchen a few minutes later. “That’s a nightmare I’ll face tomorrow. I’ll grab some takeout after I run to the store for a baby shower gift. Do you want to ride along?”
“Sure.”
As we’re shopping, I realize how nice this is. It reminds me of the week we spent together when we first met.
We’re walking hand in hand through the store when Brody stops dead in his tracks. “Oh my god. It’s a sign.”
He picks up a bag full of colorful resin frogs.
I laugh. “Why would anyone need a hundred little frogs?”
He doesn’t answer, but the look on his face tells me he has an idea.
“What are you thinking?”
“I’m thinking we break into my momma’s house tomorrow while everyone’s at the baby shower and hide these little fuckers everywhere.” He tosses all of them into the cart.
“Brody, there’s ten bags. That’s a thousand frogs.”
He kisses me on my forehead. “Beautiful and smart.”
“Brody.”
“You can be my partner in crime,” he sing-songs. “Come on. It will be fun. She’ll love it.”
“Sure she will.”
He laughs, but then he turns serious. “I want to make whatever time she has left fun.”
I wrap my arms around his waist and look up at him. “You’re the sweetest. Do you know that?”
When we get home, it feels like I’ve walked through the door a million times before. We eat, and then he cleans out half of his closet and one of the dressers for me.
I sit on the bed with the little stuffed dog Lexie gave me on my lap. “Are you sure this is what you want? I feel like I’m invading your space.”
“My space has been begging to be invaded.”
“It’s strange, you know, how quickly life can change.”
He pushes his fists into the mattress on each side of me, lowering himself to gaze into my eyes. “This is the happiest I’ve ever been, Daisy.”
“Me too.”
He takes Toto and sets him on the dresser facing away from us. “I don’t want him to see the despicable things I’m about to do to you.”
I giggle as he pulls his shirt over his head.
His domineering side takes over, and the sinful look he gives me makes my toes curl. “Clothes off,” he orders.
