Think they heard? My mental channel to my human half was locked down tight. This was a part of me that Elie couldn’t sense with our bond. I was a hypocrite. I knew it, but I didn’t care. If I had to keep secrets to keep her safe I would.

The guards normally assigned outside our room weren’t the problem. They had pulled back down the corridor to give us privacy after I made it clear that anyone who heard the noises my mate made when I made her come would lose his life. But Luc kept at least two Shifter guards—females or I wouldn’t have let Elie out of my sight— on Caly any time he wasn’t with her, even in the Palace, and they had been standing in the corridor just outside the open doors the whole time.

Definitely.

Fuck.

I told you not to bite her without her consent. He sounded as angry as I felt. I warned you there’d be consequences.

Shut up, I told him. This is your fault. You’re the one who denied the bond for five fucking years.

And you’re the one who went feral and bit her.

Too right. And I’d do it again. You were too slow. She’s mine.

She’s ours, dipshit. I was courting her. Not you.

Mine.

She won’t be either of ours if the Council finds out that she wasn’t informed about the mate bond first.

Panic was a sudden insistent drumbeat in my chest. They will try to take her away from us? The deep growl that came from my chest was instinctive. Possessive. They will not succeed.

Of course they can. Look how easily they took us from that barn. My fists clenched at the memory and I leaped to my feet, beginning to pace.

“Bastien, did I do the wrong thing?” Elie was watching me with concern. “I didn’t know what to say.”

How do I reassure her? I hated asking him for help, but he could give me words. I could give her my cock and my fingers. Perhaps that was best. Distract her until she forgot.

Yes, good plan.Never mind.

It won’t solve anything, the human warned.

No, but it will give you time to plan. I gave him the metaphorical middle finger. While I get the girl.

I turned and beelined for my mate.

Chapter 49

Electra

When his human half was in control, Bastien was cunning and strategic and his poker face was unrivalled. In his Beast mode, not so much. I watched a range of emotions cross his face as he appeared to have a discussion with his human half. Which was fascinating in itself. Human Bastien still had some influence then, which gave me hope that I could do what Luc had wanted. It was what I should want too, but I wasn’t sure that I did.

It was obvious that Bastien was worried. His heavy brows were drawn down into a deep frown and his body was coiled tight, his impressive muscles bulging. Fists clenched, pacing back and forth across the room, it was clear that something in the conversation with Caly had him deeply concerned.

Something to do with the question about courting. About a Declaration of Intent. That was familiar. Luc had mentioned it too. But Caly had clearly expected me to know what she was talking about. And the fact that I didn’t had thrown her badly. I understood her message when she left. She would bring me the information I needed.

When I asked him if I’d done something wrong, he didn’t answer my question. Instead, he did his best to distract me with orgasms.

Sometime later, after we’d made love in our bed, and then he’d gone down on me in the shower when we went to get clean, the guards outside said that Caly had delivered me some books. I couldn’t suppress the rush of nervous excitement in my belly and Bastien caught it. He went to the door, collected the books and dropped them on the table. Then he stalked to me, lifting me off the chair, then sitting and placing me on his lap. I didn’t look at the stack of books.

His breath was hot on the back of my neck as his head dipped. Fangs scraped my skin.Bored already?

Fingers pinched my nipple. My back arched. “Never,” I said, letting him feel the truth down the bond. “It’s just…” I was finding it hard to concentrate.

Just?
