“You told him those exact words, didn’t you Kyla?”
“Of-fucking-course I did.” I shrugged my shoulders as if it should have been common knowledge. “Anyway, his fragile male ego got bruised when I turned down his help. I also told him promptly that just because he lived across the hall from me didn’t mean we would date or fuck or be friends for that matter. He called me bitter. I called him an arrogant asshole with patriarchy for brains and we’ve loathed each other ever since. Enough backstory for you?”
“Yeah. That makes perfect sense. You two have liked each other since day one. Got it.”
“No. Clearly, you don’t.” I was about go into a more detailed monologue of why I didn’t like Max but my phone rang and work called. “We’ll talk later, Cadence. If I don’t get the chance to fill you in more, stop by the apartment.”
“I’ll bring tequila and snacks,” she called before walking out.
“Yes. You will. Because you’re awesome. Love you.” I blew her a kiss and fluffed the curls in my wig then I got to work. I had to pay the bills and living in that expensive ass apartment wasn’t cheap. I slid my glasses on and prepared myself to stare at the computer for hours since I wasn’t scheduled for court today.
I only had to stare at the screen for a couple of hours before there was a knock on my door. “Kyla, just the woman I wanted to see.” My boss, Mr. Allen walked in with a smile bigger than he normally wore. What exactly was the point in having my door closed if people knocked then walked in without an invitation?
“Well, here I am.” I waved my hands and he chuckled before sitting down.
“Here you are.” I could tell by the weight of his voice that he wanted me to do something for him.
“What is it, Bill,” I asked folding my hands together.
“I’m gonna get straight to the point. I’m divorcing Amber.”
I gave a gasp full to the brim with faux concern and Bill leveled me with a glare. I smiled and leaned back in my seat. “NotAmber. Not the love of your life for the past five years. What happened?” I rested my chin on my fist and he rolled his eyes. He was fully aware of my sarcastic bullshit and very used to it.
“Things were going well but I started suspecting her of using me for my money a few months ago. I confirmed it last month when I checked her bank account. I found out she’s been siphoning money from my account. That made me see if I could uncover any kind of affair.” Well shit, now I was invested in the story. I wanted to see what happened in season two of the Bill and Amber drama so I listened on. I waved my hand to speed up the story and Bill continued. “After only a few days on snooping around, I found out she’s been sleeping with her masseuse. I just…I can’t handle this shit anymore. I want a divorce and you’re the best damn attorney I know.” I won’t lie and say his compliment didn’t stroke my already ridiculous ego.
I straightened my spine and smiled at him. “I’m honestly flattered, Bill but you know I like to represent the women in divorce cases.”
“You’re a lawyer. You should like to represent who’s right.”
“I represent who has money,” I told him. We both shared a laugh and then he turned serious.
“Will you represent me, Kyla?”
“Depends. Did Amber sign a prenup?”
“You’re goddamn right she did.”
“Oh. Well then, of course I’ll represent you, Bill. It’s open and shut. You could have represented yourself.”
“I could have but I frankly don’t feel like it. I’ve got a ton on my plate as it is. I don’t need to add Amber’s phony heartbreak to the list. Besides, it’ll burn a little deeper when she sees you’re the one representing me. So, do we have a deal, Bradshaw?” I looked into his steely gray eyes and nodded.
Like I said, I went where the money was.
Bill left my office in good spirits and closed the door behind himself. The door hadn’t been closed for two minutes when Marshall walked his ass in. I was going to start locking my fucking door. “Are you making partner, finally?” He asked me.
“No, I’m not. I do however want my forty bucks. Bill is divorcing Amber.” After his jaw dropped, he slowly collected the shattered shards from the floor. Marshall, Cadence and I had an ongoing bet that Bill and Amber would divorce but I was the only one who bet he’d be the one to divorce her and not the other way around. I bet Cadence and Marshall forty dollars and I was about to be eighty dollars richer. More money for food and liquor.
My faves.
…
I spent most of the day preparing papers for Bill’s divorce. I ended up staying a little later than I’d planned but I was making sure all of our ducks were in a row. I didn’t realize how happy I was to be home until I pulled into my parking spot. I couldn’t wait to get upstairs and snatch my wig off. When I walked into the lobby, Mark wouldn’t stop staring at me with this stupid ass goofy grin on his face. Finally, I rolled my eyes and paused in front of his desk. “What?” I said.
“You and Max are dating huh?”
“Who said that?” I asked. The smile slipped from his face and he slid back in his chair a bit.
“Nobody…I was just…”
