That was a whole other shit mess that they didn’t want to wander into.

The commissioner had been nice enough to call Oliver Guy with his suggestion of who would best be able to help, and he even sent his personal aide to be there when the captain spoke to his detective.

Someone was about to be tossed into the deep end of the pool because of them, and he hoped that the young detective could handle it.

They certainly couldn’t.

He’d been chosen for this by the commissioner’s office, and that told how much faith the man had in him.

After Corbin got comfortable, his captain was ready to talk about the situation at hand.

“Son, I bet you’re wondering why we called you in for a meeting.”

Actually, yeah, he was, but honestly, he could read a room, and he knew what was going on now.

And he was excited.

This appeared to be a joint venture between the two departments.

“I was, but if Vice is here, then I know it’s work related.”

Kip spoke up.

“We have been working a case, and we had to come over here when it started to get more…complex,” he said, leaving it at that.

Landry Mahoney, the commissioner’s aid agreed.

“The commissioner is incredibly concerned with this situation. He would have been here today, but he’s tied up with other things, so he asked that I sit in so I can keep him updated,” he admitted.

Yeah, color him intrigued.

What Corbin knew was these two men, the detectives, had once been suspects in the‘Club Syn’murders, so he knew they worked vice and had for years.

Kipp was married to the once ME, and was one of the most tenured investigators in the vice division.

“Oh, really?” he asked, getting excited at the prospect that he was going to be pulled in due to his closure of some big cases.

Bless Gene and Ethan for helping him build his street cred on this.

Corbin was going to kiss them when he saw them next. He owed them so damn much.

As for the case, he knew that Vice had some big undercover operation coming down the line. Corbin had been busting his ass to close his cases and be seen as a good detective to get enough attention so he could help out.

It appeared that his plan had worked, and he was making a name for himself.

That was a damn good thing in his book.

“Yeah, we have a problem,” Payton admitted.

Well, Corbin was all ears now.

He wanted to hear all about it, especially if it meant that he was going undercover.

That was his ultimate goal, and he dreamed of adding a few undercover cases to his resume. That would ensure he moved up from‘baby detective’to full-blown ace detective. In time, he wanted his legacy to be remembered, much like Alice’s was.

Yes, he loved being a homicide detective, but too many people believed that he was one only because Alice had been one. It sucked that they thought he’d been given his title—meaning he was a nepo baby.

He wasn’t.
