She cackled, happy to have the king of bad jokes back. “You are such a dork.”
“Yeah, but I have a big dick and look extremely good naked, so that makes up for me being a dork.”
He kissed her laughing mouth, the midnight blue of the morning fading around them.
“I don’t want us putting your health in danger, and until we speak to a specialist, I’m not risking it,” he said. “I’m not risking you.”
Down the beach, people were coming out to enjoy their morning coffee or set out on a morning walk along the beach. Regardless of his perfect ass compliment, she did not want to give everyone a show, and pulled her shirt down with two hands to run back to the townhouse.
They made it in just as the sun entered the scene, and she breathed a sigh of relief. “What time are your parents arriving?”
Liam locked the door and closed the curtains. “Early in the afternoon.”
“And what time will Izzy be here to pick us up?”
“In about an hour or so.”
“Wonderful.” She tossed her shirt off. “All those extra muscles are turning me on, and I’m going to need you to do something about that.”
He winced. “What?”
“Uh, what?” Naked and confused, she didn’t understand how he wasn’t receiving the message here. “I like your muscles?”
He moved closer, standing directly in front of her. “Do you?”
“Yes?”
“You don’t sound very sure.”
She fidgeted in place. “Are we doing this or what?”
“I don’t know. First there was the lame line you used at the party, and now it’s, I like your muscles?” He fought a smile as if his life depended on it. “Once upon a time, you had the dirtiest mouth, but now,” he swooped her up into his arms to kiss soundly on the mouth, “you’ve turned into kind of a dork.”
She rolled her eyes. “You were just waiting to get me back for calling you a dork out there, weren’t you?”
“Yep.”
Chapter 40
“You’re staring, Annabeth.”
Annabeth ignored her and continued to watch Rowan sauntering around the media room decked out in black tactical gear. With his hair swept back from his handsome face, and the total control he had over the room, the man was making Annabeth drool in front of everyone.
“Earth to Annabeth,” Jamison whispered as Rowan moved from computer to computer. “Are you with us?”
“No.” Going serious, Annabeth straightened in the metal folding chair. “No, I am not. How am I supposed to be able to listen if Rowan is walking around looking like that? Who gave him those clothes?” She flapped a hand in exasperation. “And does he even know how to use a gun?”
Loaded down with weapons, Jamison spied two handguns strapped to Rowan’s waist and some sort of hunting knife between his shoulder blades. “Well, he is from Texas.”
“What does that matter?” Annabeth hissed, scooting her chair closer so her mother could join them at the folding table.
“He comes from a long line of ranchers.”
“Again, that doesn’t matter,” Annabeth huffed, not convinced. “I don’t know what’s happening, but I don’t want him getting hurt.”
Jamison didn’t know what was happening either, but when Liam stepped into the media room dressed identically to Rowan, she suddenly understood why Annabeth was in such a tizzy. It had been too long since she’d seen him in what she called his “go” gear, and it hit her right where it counted.
“Jesus.”
