Samuel nodded and shoved Fitz back under his arm. “Then let’s go.”
Next to her, Ben snorted, turning away to hide his laughter.
“Shut the fuck up, Dad,” Samuel growled.
“Not a chance, Son.”
Chapter 29
“Iagreedtoyoumoving in, but we’re not sharing a room.”
Evie drew the bed sheets up to cover her smile. They’d arrived at the house close to midnight, exhausted and more than ready for bed. “Don’t be so mean.”
Samuel raised an eyebrow in her direction. “If we start our first night living together like this, it’ll set a precedent.”
At the end of the bed, Fitz raised a paw in surrender, meowing sweetly at Samuel scowling down at him.
“No.” Samuel disappeared from the room and returned waving a cat bed. “You have your own space in your own room.”
Evie exploded into laughter, the throbbing headache already getting better.
“How is this funny?” Samuel demanded, snatching Fitz up. “I’m giving the little shit his own room, and he wants more?”
He glared down at the cat, shaking his head. “You are greedy, just like your mother.”
Tossing the pet bed in the hall, he dropped Fitz onto it and shut the bedroom door. The moonless night shrouded the room in almost complete darkness, and Evie shimmed deeper beneath the covers. She tried not to let the few seconds of blindness bother her but couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief when the bathroom light clicked on.
Samuel came over to the bed. “Better?”
“Can you sleep with a light on?”
“Don’t worry about me.” He got in, settling her across his broad chest. “Sleep.”
“I thought it was dangerous for me to sleep,” she said, her eyes already closing. “You promised to do all the work.”
“Go to sleep, Evangeline.”
And sleep she did. Dreamless, like the dead, waking alone with the morning sun beaming light into every corner of Samuel’s bedroom.
Theirbedroom.
Having lived in the same home her entire life, this would take some getting used to. This washerbed, inherroom, inherhouse.
“Good morning.”
“Good God,” she mumbled when Samuel strolled into the bedroom totally naked, giving her yet another thing to get used to. “I mean, good morning.”
“I thought about inviting you to join me in the shower, but it seemed wrong to wake you up.”
Her nagging headache was completely gone, with only a little fuzziness hanging around the edges like her brain was free floating in her skull. “Next time, don’t hesitate.”
He grinned, pulling on his boxers. “The shower’s all yours. I’m going to feed Fitz and make sure he didn’t break anything last night.”
Evie got out of bed when he was gone, grabbing the small bag she’d brought from Haven with her. It held a few articles of clothing and some toiletries. Today they would gather more of her things, working on moving everything over as the days went on.
The expansive bathroom was a far cry from the one she shared with Annabeth. It held double marble sinks with a central vanity area and a jacuzzi tub in the corner, positioned to where the occupants had a stunning view of the beach. The shower was the size of Jamison’s walk-in closet, and included multiple shower heads angled to spray down from every direction.
She set her things out on an empty shelf in the shower, and got in, trying not to drown under all the high-pressure water flow aimed for someone of Samuel’s height. Once finished, Evie slipped into one of her new bra and panty sets she’d purchased in Port Michaelson with Micah.
