“No, I’m not. Nothing is wrong.”
Whacking him again, Evie pointed at his neck. “Samuel!”
Taking a deep breath, he struggled to get the words out for a second. “Tell me you’re happy.”
Evie’s heart fell into her stomach. Ninety-day mark. Her brain screamed that she was being ridiculous, but it didn’t change that they were approaching their ninety-day mark of being together, and he always dumped his women directly before their time was up.
“I am happy, you asshole,” she snarled, on the verge of tears. “Just say what you want to say. Stop being so weird.”
Her angry growl had him relaxing under her. “Tell me you love me.”
Evie gritted her teeth. “I do love you.”
“Good,” he exhaled, leaning up to brush his lips over hers. “Now tell me you’re going to marry me.”
A quiet like never before settled inside her. She gulped, blinking down at him as all forms of language evaporated from her brain.
Sentences.
Words.
Gone.
Evie thought if she tried hard, she might be able to sing the alphabet song but doubted it.
In place of language, and coherent thoughts, were now only brightly colored bursts of emotions exploding like fireworks. Her inner self danced among the fluttering butterflies, whooping and spinning with her arms wide.
But on the outside, she remained still in his lap, her mouth hanging open as he pulled something from his pocket.
Taking her shaking hand, Samuel slid a ring on her finger.
“If you don’t like it, we can pick something out more to your taste.”
The uncertainty in his voice broke through her shock, and a tear slipped loose.
“This is the ring my mom gave Josie, and I thought the meaning behind it was an appropriate fit for us. It represents not wasting time when you love someone, and whenever I look at it, I’m reminded of how we shouldn’t wait to seize what we want in life.”
The ring slid into place on her finger, and they stared at it together. Evie had never seen anything more beautiful and wiggled her fingers to watch the diamond sparkle in the light.
“And more than anything, I want you,” he whispered. “You’re etched in my bones, Evangeline. Every inch of my soul was written to love you.”
Coming closer, his mouth hovered over hers. “Marry me.”
Yes. Yes. Yes.
Her mind chanted the word.
Her heart sang it.
But for the first time in the known history of Samuel and Evie, she continued to remain at a loss for words.
He blinked at her anxiously, her silence scaring him. With a centering breath, she wheezed out the first thing she could think of. “You’re all I want out of life.”
No!
Evie inwardly cringed. He deserved better. Looking away, she tried to collect her thoughts and form a proper response, but the sincerity and love beaming up at her from him was so damn distracting.
“Um, I mean… in life, I want you.”
